International Rugby: USA Squad for South American tour

Photo Rugby Wrap Up
With the Rugby World Cup rapidly approaching USA Eagles headcoach Mike Tolkin has made few surprises in the naming of his training squad for the upcoming three match tour of Uruguay and Argentina.  The North Americans are to train in Florida for five days before flying south on April 19. Included in the squad are seventeen capped players who are expected to form the core the the USA's World Cup squad with them being joined by foreign based players currently unavailable due to club commitments. For others the tour offers a late opportunity to break into the team ahead of the Pacific Nations Cup in North America this summer.

USA test captain Todd Clever will not tour South America. The 63 time capped veteran misses the tour due to injury but is expected to recover in time for the home internationals this summer. Also missing out is Ben Tarr while Tim Maupin cannot commit to the dates. Combined with professional players missing due to the tour taking place outside of the World Rugby international release windows the North American team will be different to that of last November.

Two foreign based players have nonetheless made the squad. The English based Robbie Shaw and Ronnie McLean who play in lower English divisions have both been included. They are to join the likes of Lou Stanfill (pictured above), Seamus Kelly, Tim Stanfill, Kyle Sumsion, Matt Trouville, John Cullen, Ollie Kilifi, John Quill and Shalom Suniula among the biggest names in the touring party.

The USA's touring team is to be officially the 'A' team which means there will be no World Rankings points on the line. The USA Selects will begin their tour in Montevideo with a match at the Estadio Charrúa on Thursday April 23 before playing two matches in the Northern Argentine city of Salta on April 28 and May 02.
