Uruguay's return to the Rugby World Cup after a twelve year absence was boosted this afternoon as Los Teros recorded a 77-3 home victory against Paraguay to open the 2015 South American Championship. In the first capped match of the year for both teams Uruguay underlined it's dominance by controlling play and running in eleven unanswered tries. In what was the first of ten capped internationals leading into the Rugby World Cup Uruguay played strongly in both the set-piece and broken play with tries coming from both backs and forwards. A late penalty from Paraguay saw the visitors returning home with a consolation.

Uruguay's players showed their intent from the begining with back-rower Agustín Alonso crossing for an opening minute try. Left winger Jerónimo Etcheverry converted what was his first of eleven conversions. He was on the mark in converting tries throughout the match as Uruguay ran-in seven first half tries and five in the second half.

Etcheverry was one of a number of Uruguayan players involved who are in contention for places in Uruguay's Rugby World Cup squad. Players including Oscar Durán, Santiago Gilbernau, Diego Magno, Mathiás Palomeque and Alberto Román all started against Paraguay. They are expected to build the back-bone of Uruguay's World Cup team together with foreign based players.

Uruguay is to play host to Brazil next weekend in a second round match in the South American Championship. Los Teros will then complete the competition by facing Chile in an away match on May 09. Before taking-on Chile Uruguay will face the USA on April 23. The compact calendar has Uruguay playing at least one match every week between now and June 21.

In additional preparation matches for the World Cup Uruguay is to play against the likes of Argentina, Fiji, Georgia and Japan before arriving in Cardiff for the World Cup. Uruguay is to face sub-hosts Wales at the Millennium Stadium and close against the official host nation, England in Manchester. Uruguay will also play against Australia and Fiji with the match against Fiji in Milton Keynes being targeted as the most important fixture.
