Top 14: Americas Players Review - Round 13

Photo Rugby Time
Round thirteen of the French domestic championship, the Top 14 was played on Friday and Saturday and it delivered three upset results. Paris, Bayonne and Montpellier all managed to win matches that the opposition was expected to win. The competition has been very competitive this season with there still not being two teams likely to be relegated. Involved in round 13 were a number of players from the Americas, many of whom are to be playing in Rugby World Cup 2015. The Americas is the only region never to have been allocated hosting rights to a Rugby World Cup but Argentina ought to change this by hosting in 2023.

Grenoble 30-43 Paris
Grenoble lost at home for the first time this season in the opening match of the round. The result was four away points for Stade Français but none for the home side. Uncapped Argentine front-rower Santiago Garcia Botta was a replacement loosehead prop for the Parisians. Staring for his team was Sergio Parisse who captains Italy but is from La Plata. The team is coaches by the top point scorer from Rugby World Cup 1999 Gonzalo Quesada who could be a future Pumas coach.

Bayonne 15-12 Bordeaux
Heroics from former Pumas Santiago Fernández saw Bayonne complete a crucial home victory over Bordeaux-Begles on Saturday afternoon. In a tryless match the home team completed a 78th minute victory by virtue of fly half Fernández landing a dropgoal. The twelve other points scored by his team came from the boot of right winger and former Puma Martín Bustos Moyano. Also involved was Benjamín Macome who entered the match in the 28th minute from the bench.

Brive 19-6 Oyonnax
A solid home win by Brive sees the club edging further ahead of the bottom two. Brive is now six points above the thirteenth placed La Rochelle and two ahead of Oyonnax who was unable to secure competition points in the loss against Brive. All of Oyonnax's points were scored by former Puma Benjamín Urdapilleta who played fly half. Also involved was former Pumas scrumhalf Agustín Figuerola who started inside Urdapilleta.

Montpellier 23-20 Toulouse
A hard-fought home victory sees Montpellier winning for the first time in ten weeks. The club has been suffering following the loss of start fly half François Trinh-Duc and has also been without other, less known players. The win sees Montpellier moving up ahead of Grenoble while Toulouse are now just two points above Bayonne. Starting for Toulouse was former Puma Patricio Albacete who played the full match in the second-row.

Racing Métro 27-8 La Rochelle
A home win by Racing Métro sees the capital city team give itself a five point advantage over Grenoble. In being denied any points La Rochelle remains in the relegation zone but could potentially exit it with a win in round 14. Racing Métro's Pumas were not involved in the fixture. On the bench for La Rochelle was Argentine Leandro Cedaro who is capped by Italy.

Toulon 30-6 Lyon
Reigning champions Toulon produced a solid second half showing to power home to a 30-6 victory scoring three tries to zero. Involved in the win was Pumas fly half Nicolás Sánchez who kicked a last minute conversion as the replacement goalkicker. Involved for Lyon were Pumas Juan Manuel Leguizamón and Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro.

Clermont 19-10 Castres
Clermont Auvergne backed-up an impressive home win last weekend in the European Rugby Champions Cup with another home win, this time over Castres Olympique. This season has been a notably poor one by Castres with the club facing the reality of relegation. After 13 rounds it remains rooted to the bottom of the table. With Clermont forced to play half the match without a play Castres had a great opportunity to win but Clermont was still too strong. Portugal international Julian Bardy was red carded. Starting for Castres was Uruguay's Rodrigo Capó Ortega.
