With scores locked at 5-5 in the 65th minute in Bordeaux Canadian winger DTH van der Merwe collected a perfectly directed kick to go over untouched in the left corner. James Pritchard landed the conversion to put Canada 12-5 ahead but a try from Japan in overtime was the Asians sneak in a draw. van der Merwe has appeared in two Rugby World Cups and has played in all eight matches during this time. Aged 28 he is expected to play in a third World Cup next year and ought to be one of Canada's most known players in the opening fixture which will be in Wales. van der Merve has been playing in the Pro 12 for Scottish side, the Glasgow Warriors since 2009.
