Colombia is the new champion of the South America's B competition, CONSUR B. The northern South American nation defeated Venezuela earlier today in the second of two final rounds matches. With both teams already having defeated Ecuador and Peru in the earlier round matches today's clash was, in effect, the tournament final. The championship victory was the first for Colombia since 2009 and only its second ever CONSUR B title. In between times Peru, Venezuela and Paraguay had all been South American B champions.
Peru 24-17 Ecuador
In the first of two matches earlier today a tight match between the Andean countries of Peru and Ecuador demonstrated how far Ecuador has come in such short time. Ecuador qualified for the CONSUR B this season after winning the CONSUR C in Costa Rica in 2013. It meant that, despite not being an IRB member, it had the right to face established opponents. The narrow loss against Peru sent shock waves to Peruvian rugby as the 2010 champions were expected to win this fixture by a notable scoreline.
Colombia 27-10 Venezuela
Ecuador's opening CONSUR B fixture was against Colombia and the Tucanos showed no mercy in running out to a 112-0 victory. Venezuela also impressed against Los Piqueros but were not convincing against Peru. Colombia, consequently entered the final on home soil as heavy favorites and delivered the expected result. The 27-10 victory featured a 27-0 half time lead.
Previous CONSUR B champions Brazil and Paraguay now play in CONSUR A. The same four countries from the 2014 edition will return in 2015. The 2014 CONSUR C will take place in Panama later this year.
