CONSUR: Venezuela and Colombia win South American B matches

The Northern South American countries of Colombia and Venezuela recorded wins on Sunday over Ecuador and Peru to open the 2014 South American B Championship. Played in the northern Colombian city of Apartadó in sweltering heat the opening round of matches challenged the players immensely. They are to play two more test matches over the coming six days with the overall winner being crowned champion of CONSUR B.

Venezuela 33-28 Peru
Played in very hot conditions, Venezuela started the tournament with a narrow victory over Peru on Sunday morning. With both teams looking to attack the score was 20-15 at half time and, despite fighting back, Peru could not catch Venezuela who won the match which had kicked-off at 8:30am due to the heat.

The countries have faced-off once a year since Rugby World Cup 1999 with Venezuela having a record of nine wins compared to Peru's five. Colombia is ranked higher than both in the IRB World Rankings but before today had never played a sanctioned international match against Ecuador. Indeed the continued expansion of the sport throughout the Americas means more countries are playing against each other than ever before.

Colombia 112-0 Ecuador
Ecuador won promotion to CONSUR B last year after having finished the CONSUR C tournament undefeated in Costa Rica. It saw Ecuador replacing Paraguay in CONSUR B and Paraguay returning to CONSUR A to compete in the South American Championship and completing a win over Brazil. The transition from CONSUR C to B could be difficult for Los Piqueros who were unable to score any points against the South American B Championship host nation.

The result means Colombia is now in pole position to win the title. Los Tucuanos will take one Peru on Wednesday while Ecuador will face Venezuela. The third round will be played on Saturday with a championship final between the two top placed sides and a Bronze final.
