The governing body of Canadian rugby has confirmed that Canada has retained hosting rights for the Americas Rugby Championship. The 2014 event will again be played at the Canadian Centre of Excellence in Langford, British Columbia. As in 2013 there are to be four competing countries - the four four from the Americas. A two-two North-South split will see Canada and the USA representing NACRA while CONSUR nations Argentina and Uruguay will again take part. Absent is Paraguay, the South American Championship runners-up who previously claimed they would be playing based on their performance in CONSUR.
The 2014 competition will see all three competitors playing matches against each other. Games are to be played on October 11, 15 and 19. The opening matches are to be USA v Argentina Jaguares and Canada v Uruguay. After a three day turn-around Uruguay will take-on Argentina and Canada will meet the USA. Finally on November 19 the tournament will come to an end with Uruguay v the USA and Canada v Argentina. None of the matches are to be capped with them instead being A teams.
Three of the four countries have already confirmed their places in Rugby World Cup 2015. The USA will face Japan, Samoa, South Africa and Scotland in Pool B. In Pool C Argentina is to face Georgia, Namibia, New Zealand and Tonga. While Canada will be the only non-European in Pool D which also includes France, Ireland, Italy and Romania.
Uruguay is one of four remaining countries to claim the Final Place Play-Off spot which will see the twentieth participant in Rugby World Cup 2015 confirmed. Uruguay is to face Hong Kong next month and, if successful, will face the winner of Russia v Zimbabwe. The Final Place Play-Off Final is to be played after the Americas Rugby Championship which means Uruguay will be better prepared than was the case in previous qualification campaigns against Portugal in the run-in to 2007 and Romania in 2011.
All matches are to be streamed live by Rugby Canada. They will be shown here.
