International Rugby: Likely Argentine team to face Ireland

Los Pumas headcoach Daniel Hourcade strongly indicated who is to start and who is not to against Ireland in Saturday's home test match in Resistencia. Heavy training sessions on Monday featuring the squad members provide a clear map of who Hourcade has in mind to start the test match. Not all of he squad members were present. Mising was Tomás Cubelli who played against England on Sunday, Ramiro Herrera who played in the Top 14 Final on Saturday and Matías Díaz who played Super Rugby on Friday.

The three returning players could all be involved in the match against Ireland but the match-up of the team is otherwise seemingly clear.  Either Díaz or Herrera is expected to start at tighthead prop in a front-row combination with Lucas Noguera Paz and Matías Cortese. The pair trained together on Monday with Francisco Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro filling in at tighthead prop.

Tomás Lavanini and Matías Alemanno continued their second-row combination which was utilized throughout the majority of the IRB Pacific Cup in Australia. Behind them Benjamín Macome trained at the back of the scrum in a back-row combination featuring Rodrigo Báez and Javier Ortega Desio.

Aside from Cortese all starting forwards are players who came through the PladAR system and have played under Hourcade. The starting back-line is to be much the same. Martín Landajo is set to captain Argentina from scrum-half in a halves combination with Nicolás Sánchez. The mid-field that trained together saw Gabriel Ascárate and Jerónimo De la Fuente in the centres while the back-three had Joaquín Tuculet at fullback and Manuel Montero and Matías Orlando as the starting wingers.

Of note is the spread of players with the majority from outside of Buenos Aires. Tucumán is set to be highly represented with Orlando, Sánchez, Ascárate, Macome and Noguera Paz all set to start. Mendoza will have Cortese and Báez, Córdoba Alemanno wihl De la fuente is from Rosario.
