International Rugby: Hourcade Selects Squad for Resistencia

Los Pumas Headcoach Daniel Hourcade has selected twenty-five players for Argentina's first home test match of the year. Argentina is to take-on Ireland in the first of two tests next Saturday at the Estadio Bicentenario in the north-eastern city of Resistencia. Hourcade has left out players named in the initial squad for the three home test matches in June.

The selected squad is further indication of Houradism, an approach vastly different to that of Santago Phelan who used the June tests in 2012 and 2013 to give game time to European based players who would not feature in the Rugby Championship. Hourcade is acting notably different by prioritizing the long term needs of the team ahead of calling upon individuals who will not feature later on in the international season.

Hourcade has many more domestic based players than foreign based players in his squad, the vast majority of whom have played under Hourcade previously and were a part of the IRB Nations Cup title winning Pampas XV. Scrum-halves Martín Landajo and Tomás Cubelli shared the captaincy in the Australian tournament and they will again do so in June.

Selected from abroad are Super Rugby players Manuel Carizza and Matías Díaz while Lucas González Amorosino, Benjamín Macome, Nicolás Sánchez and Joaquín Tuculet are back from France permanently. In addition Gabriel Ascárate is back from Scotland, Francisco Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro is back from Wales while another tighthead prop, Ramiro Herrera of Castres has been selected for the first time. Also named is former Gloucester hooker Matías Cortese.

Those not selected for the first test are second-rower Lucas Ponce, centres Matías Morino and Javier Rojas, prop Francisco Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro, hooker Santiago Iglesias Valdez, scrum-half Felipe Ezcurra and back-rowers Antonio Ahualli de Chazal and Lisandro Ahualli de Chazal. Of the players left out of the first test Rojas and Iglesias Valdez were selected for Argentina's European tour last November.

For some players not selected for the test in Resistencia they will have a chance either against Ireland in Tucumán on June 14 or against Scotland in Córdoba on June 20. For others they will instead be on duty for Los Jaguares in the IRB Tbilisi Cup also taking place in June. The test match this coming weekend is to be played on Saturday June 7 and will kick-off at 3:40pm local time.
