The 2014 edition of the CONSUR C international rugby competition is to be played in the Central American country of El Savador. Los Torogoces were the fourth, and bottom placed, team in the 2013 competition hosted by Costa Rica. Securing the tournament is a tremendous boost for the sport in the country and highlights the opportunities which are continuing to open for rugby throughout the Americas. Rugby is now played in every Spanish speaking country in Latin America.
Details of the format and dates of the 2014 tournament are yet to be made official. At this point in time it is known that Ecuador will not be involved. Of the 2013 participants El Salvador is expected to be joined by both Costa Rica and Guatemala while there is room for an additional country or possibly more.
As winners of the CONSUR C tournament Ecuador won promotion to CONSUR B which in 2014 is to be a Northern South American competition. Ecuador will be the bottom seed of a Four Nations tournament featuring Colombia, Peru and Venezuela. Unless CONSUR policies are altered there will be a place for the 2014 CONSUR C winner to join CONSUR B next year.
During the final day of the 2013 event Nicaragua and Panama faced-off in a curtain raiser. They did so despite neither nation being a part of the CONSUR C competition. Over time it is hoped that there can be a format in place for both to participate in CONSUR rugby events. The door could also be opening for another - Honduras. The country is Central American nation has recently proclaimed itself as the newest rugby playing country in the world.
