CONSUR Cup: Argentina Squad named to face Uruguay

The UAR has confirmed a twenty-three man squad to represent Argentina in next Saturday's official test match against Los Teros in Paysandú, Uruguay. Argentina is looking to retain the title of being the South American champion and will be up against the winners of the 2014 Mayor A, a new competition which has significantly benefitted the region. Selected are the leading domestic based players, many of whom were involved with the Pampas XV in the Pacific Cup in Australia.

A strong squad of twenty-three players has been named to train for Argentina's first official test match of 2014, an away fixture against Los Teros in Uruguay. Included are players from throughout the country, including two with professional performance in the Rabo Direct Pro 12 this season. Centre Gabriel Ascárate and prop Francisco Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro are joined by former Gloucester hooker Matías Cortese in the squad.

Also included are some players to have started for Argentina against elite opposition and even players with experience in the Rugby Championship. Headcoach Daniel Hourcade has both scrum-halves, Martín Landajo and Tomás Cubelli, in his squad with a third, Felipe Escurra also included. 21 year old Escurra is uncapped and his selection is of not given that Hourcade will only have one specialist fly half.

Santiago González Iglesias is the only pivot in the squad altough Ascárate has previous experience playing in the position in the Pro d2. The pair are likely to form a 10-12 combination with Matías Orlando possibly playing outside centre. The back-three is likely to see Santiago Cordero combine with Manuel Montero and Tomás Carrió.

The starting front-row will certainly be similar to the Pacific Cup. Either Cortese or Santiago Iglesias Valdez will be joined by Lucas Noguera Paz and Bruno Postiglioni with Tetaz Chaparro and Julián Montoya, anoher hooker, both on the bench. Another notable point is that the squad has three hookers meaning that the bench will consist of versatile players in both the forwards and backs.

Tomás Lavanini and Matías Alemanno are set to retain their second-row combination from the Pacific Cup with Lucas Ponce covering from the bench. Some promising back-rowers have been named with 23 year old Javier Ortega Desio being one to look out for. Neither Facundo Isa nor Tomás de la Vega have been selected. Their exclusion together with that of centre Matías Moroni is noteworthy.

Also missing are some players who were involved in the Top 14 this season whose clubs are not a part of the play-offs. The likes of Nicolás Sánchez, Benjamín Macome, Martín Bustos Moyano, Lucas González Amorosino, Benjamín Urdapilleta and Agustín Figuerola are expected to play in June and all have completed club duty in France for the season.

The squad is to meet in Buenos Aires on Wednesday, at the city's PladAR facilities located at Club Champagnat, and travel to Uruguay on Thursday afternoon. Hourcade is seeking impressive performances from the players with spots on the line for the home tests against Ireland and Scotland as well as in Los Jaguares with Argentina's A side to play in the Tbilisi Cup in Georgia.

Kick-off in Paysandú is scheduled for 3:45pm local time. It is to be the final test for Uruguay against South American opposition while Argentina will face Los Condores the following weekend in Santiago de Chile.
