Nacional de Clubes: Round Six Wrap

The sixth and final round of the Nacional de Clubes was played in Argentina over the weekend. It confirmed which teams will be playing in the Semi Finals as the four pool winners will be those advancing. Involved were notable players to have featured for Argentina including players involved in Rugby World Cups.

Argentina´s first and second choice scrumhalves from 2013 - Martín Landajo and Tomás Cubelli were examples of players starting for their clubs. Landajo did so for CASI while Cubelli played for Belgrano, also of Buenos Aires. The pair are in line for places in the June test squad that will face Ireland and Scotland and both would appear to also be in the reckoning for Rugby World Cup 2015.

Last November under 20 hooker Santiago Iglesias Valdéz was called up by Daniel Hourcade to replace the injured Agustín Creevy. He is another likely to be shortlisted for international duty in June. He started for Universitario de Tucumán, a club captained by former Racing Métro and Pumas back-rower Alvaro Galindo. Also starting was Pampas XV back-rower Lisando Ahualli de Chazal. Veteran Puma Julio Farías Cabello also played in the back-row, doing so for Tucumán RC.

Rosario club Duendes had Pampas XV fullback Román Miralles starting at the back. He is another pushing for a place in the June test squad. Second-rower Matías Alemanno and Tomás Lavanini are doing likewise and both started with Alemanno playing for Córdoba´s La Tablada and Lavanini for Hindú. Also involved for La Tablada was Italy´s starting fly half from Rugby World Cup 2007, Ramiro Paz. Lavanini, meanwhile, was joined by Hernán Senillosa who played in two Rugby World Cups for Argentina.

Former Agen winger and Puma Belisario Agulla was on the bench for Hindú. His brother, Horacio, has been capped more than fifty times by Argentina and has done so many times with Gonzalo Camacho whose brother, Lucas captained Hindú and kept Belisario Agulla out of the starting lineup. Another former professional and Pumas winger, Agustín Gosio captained Newman.

Gosio led a side that also included the most capped and highest points scorer in the history of Los Pumas, Felipe Contepomi. He will not feature for his country again but one player looking to break into Daniel Hourcade´s squad is Santiago González Iglesias who started for Alumni against Jockey de Rosario.

The Semi Finals are to be played next weekend, both of which will take place in Rosario. Jockey is to face CUBA and Duendes will take on Hindú. The Argentine club champion is therefore to be from either Rosario or Buenos Aires.
