Nacional de Clubes: Round Five Wrap

Round five of Argentina´s domestic club competition, the Nacional de Clubes took place on Saturday afternoon. The competition serves not only to crown a national club champion but also to identify potential players for national duty. Involved in round five were players of the past and present with there being not  only players to have played in Rugby World Cups but even one to have captained Argentina.

Players involved in Rugby World Cups dating as far back as 1999 were involved in the fifth round of action played earlier today. The biggest name involved was Felipe Contepomi who played fly half for Newman. He was joined in the starting lineup by Agustín Gosio who joined Contepomi in the team that defeated Georgia in Rugby World Cup 2011. Squad member from 2003 and 2007, Hernán Senillosa was involved for Hindú. Former Pumas back-rowers Alvaro Galindo and Julio Farías Cabello, who both started in Rugby Championship matches, started for their Tucumán clubs.

Also involved in competition today were a number of players chasing spots in the squad for Rugby World Cup 2015. Both players who were utilized by Martín Gaitan to captain Los Pampas XV in the IRB Pacific Cup started for their respective Buenos Aires clubs. Martín Landajo did so for CASI and Tomás Cubelli for Belgrano. Others starting matches included centre and Sevens player Matías Moroni who was joined by Tomás de La Vega in starting for CUBA. Also starting for a Buenos Aires side was Tomás Lavanini who played second-row for Hindu.

Clubs from outside of Buenos Aires also had Pampas XV players involved. Rosaio club Duendes featured Román Miralles, Tomás Carrio and Jerónimo de la Fuente while Patrio Fernández started for Jockey. Fernández was the leading fly half for Los Pampas XV in the IRB Pacific Cup. He is likely to miss out on playing for Argentina in June due to it clashing with the IRB Junior World Championship in New Zealand. Should he miss out then the leading domestic based fly half would be Santiago González Iglesias who started for Alumni on Saturday.

Fernández was a member of the 2012 Junior World Championship as was Facundo Isa who started for Santiago Lawn Tennis, the same club that produced Argentina´s November 2013 tour captain Juan Manuel Leguizamón. Isa played in Leguizamón´s position and is an option for the future. Another from the 2013 Pumitas to play for a northern Argentine club was Santiago Iglesias Valdez. The hooker was on the bench for Universitario Tucumán.
