CONSUR: Uruguay Squad to face Paraguay

SUDAMERICANO MAYOR “A” CON NUEVO FORMATO
Los Teros headcoach Pablo Lemoine has selected a twenty-three man squad for Uruguay´s opening match of the 2014 South American Championship. The squad is notably different to that which represented Uruguay in the recent Rugby World Cup home and away qualification series against the USA. Uruguay will travel to Asunción to face Paraguay in a first round match this Saturday.

The squad is below full strength as European based players have not been included. Had they been available to Lemoine it is questionable as to whether or not the former Stade Français prop would have selected them. The focus is on Rugby World Cup qualification and Lemoine needs to identify the best players to face Asia 2 and then the winner of Africa 2 v Europe 3.

Returning for Uruguay are two notable players, Carlos Arboleya and Matías Arocena. Arboleya is back from retirement after he had hung up his boots in 2011 while Arocena has recovered from ligament damage to return to the squad. Also selected are a num,ber of players from Uruguay´s Rugby Sevens team including Nicolás Freitas, Francisco López, Federico Favaro and Gastón Gibernau.

The match will be played in the Guaraní capital of Asunción at the Yacht y Golf Club on Saturday. Los Teros will back-up from playing Paraguay away by doing so against Brazil seven days later. Brazil will host Uruguay at Bento Gonçaçves in Rio Grande do Sul state on May three while Uruguay will then hsot Chile in Montevideo on May 10 and Argentine in Salto on May 17.
