Argentina´s future Super Rugby franchise, Los Pampas XV brought to a close its season in Australia earlier today. Fresh off winning the IRB Pacific Cup on Sunday Los Pampas XV faced Super Rugby franchise the Brumbies in Canberra and completed a comfortable victory. The young Argentine side will now return home with players to train in their respective regional centres. Some will be involved in test matches against Chile and Uruguay in May and many will likely face Ireland and Scotland in June.
The 34-12 victory was the second match between the sides. The Brumbies A team hosted the Pampas XV in the Pacific Cup but unlike the Pacific Cup match today´s game was officially against the senior Brumbies side. In title it was the Pampas XV taking on the Brumbies. In actuality, however, the Brumbies side was far from the genuine article which is seen in official Super Rugby matches.
The South Americans had few problems in completing victory. The five tries to two victory saw Santiago Cordero, Facundo Isa, Tomás Cubelli, Matías Orlando and Ramiro Moyano all crossing for tries. Santiago González Iglesias also got his name on the score sheet with one penalty and three conversions. He was selected to start the match at fly half in place of Patricio Fernández who was moved to fullback.
The progress of the Pampas XV can not only be seen in terms of the results but also in the age of most players. Many are graduates of Los Pumitas and were involved in the IRB Junior World Championship as recently as last year. They are also, increasingly, from throughout Argentina and less so from Buenos Aires. Twenty-six of Argentina´s thirty man squad that finished third in Rugby World Cup 2007 were from the capital.
By way of comparison of the five players who scored tries two are from Buenos Aires, two from Tucumán and one from Santiago del Estero. The UAR is acting to further promote rugby as nation wide as possible which has seen Salta allocated hosting rights to the Rugby Championship match against South Africa this year. It is to be the biggest match ever in Northern Argentina and will service the greater area which includes both Tucumán and Santiago del Estero.
