Top 14: Lucas González Amorosino scores first try for Oyonnax

In his seventh Top 14 match of the season Puma Lucas González Amorosino went over for his first try of the season. His second half try against Toulon on Saturday was not enough to prevent his team from being badly beaten but it was a try to suggest he has plenty of rugby left in him. Last week González Amorosino indicated that he is not likely to play Super Rugby for the Argentine franchise as he expects that his time as a Pumas will be over.

González Amorosino joined Oyonnax this season as a medical joker. He previously played in France for Montpellier from 2011-2013 and did so with distinction. In the 2011-2012 season González Amorosino scored seven tries in eighteen Top 14 matches for the club and did so starting every match, usually at fullback. He was not retained beyond the 2012-2013 season due to Montpellier being less than happy in losing players to international duty for the purposes of the Rugby Championship.

In his first try for Oyonnax in the Top 14 González Amorosino illustrated his natural side-stepping ability as he moved off both feet to get passed would be Toulon defenders. Oyonnax needs more tries from the Puma as the club is facing relegation back to the Pro d2. The club is presently in thirteenth position on 35 competition points. In twelfth place is Perpignan on 42 points.

Oyonnax has two matches in hand after fixtures were abandoned due to the fields being unplayable. The club´s next two matches are both at home with Montpellier and Grenoble visiting. Other fixtures remaining include matches against Brive, Perpignan and Toulouse. The club can, thus, escape relegation but it must win all home matches and win at least one on the road. The club´s postponed fixtures are a home match v Bordeaux-Begles and and away trip to bottom of the table Biarritz.
