USA Eagles Rugby Sevens Headcoach Matt Hawkins has announced his squad for the upcoming USA Sevens to be played in Las Vegas next weekend. The twelve man squad to be captained by Nick Edwards features players from the residency squad and is arguably the strongest USA squad so far this season.
The North Americans failed to impress in the first three rounds of the 2013-2014 HSBC Sevens World Series. The USA won the Shield Final in the opening leg played on Australia´s Gold Coast but was winless in the second leg in Dubai and only won once in Port Elizabeth.
The USA will be aiming much higher on home soil with the annual event at the Sam Boyd Stadium increasingly becoming regarded as amongst the best alongside Hong Kong and Wellington. Key to improvement will be the new faces with Shalom Suniula back for the first time this season and a first opportunity for Danny Barrett who impressed for the USA Selects in the 2013 Americas Rugby Championship.
Barrett is a player with potential to be of long term value and possibly feature at Rugby World Cup 2015 while Suniula has been utilized in the past. A number of others such as vice captain Zack Test are also of note as is Carlin Isles who signed to play NFL for the Detroit Lions. While he is free to play for the USA in the tournament his long term status remains clouded and he is unlikely to be utilized by the national team at senior level.
The USA has a pool that it can win provided that it brings it´s A game. The opposition sides are to be Argentina, France and Spain.
