The second day of the 2014 USA Sevens in Las Vegas saw two countries from the Americas reach the final eight - Argentina and Canada. The North Americans now have a chance at winning an IRB World Sevens Series tournament for the first time.
Canada qualified for the Semi Finals on Day two after completing multiple victories over Tier One unions. For Canada the day began with a must win victory over Wales which the North Americans won 21-19 with a late try. Canada then required South Africa to defeat Kenya if it were to advance to the Cup Quarter Finals. The South Africans delivered with a 19-7 result which set up a Cup Quarter Final against Pool D winners France.
France had won Pool D after defeating Argentina 14-0 which saw the South Americans finish in second place and take on South Africa in the Cup Quarter Finals. The Boks were far too strong in winning 36-0 which means Argentina will play in the Plate Semi Finals on Sunday. Argentina will face Australia with the winner to then face either England or France.
Canada will be up against South Africa in the Cup Final should it be able to complete an upset Semi Final win over New Zealand. Success would mean that Canada would be a champion of an IRB Sevens World Series event for the first time in history.
Further down both Uruguay and the USA are in contention to list the Shield. They will face-off in one of the two Shield Semi Finals this afternoon with the winner facing either Portugal or Spain in the Shield Final. The USA will be targeting the Shield title now.
It has not been the best tournament for the home side who did complete the pool phase with a 31-10 win over Spain but was then defeated 12-7 by Wales in the Bowl Quarter Final. Uruguay remains winless going into the final day but the participation of Los Teros has seen the South Americans score some good tries. On day two Uruguay lost 43-5 against England and 38-14 against Fiji in the Bowl Quarter Final.
