The most prestigious competition hosted in Uruguay each year was played on Friday and Saturday and saw a visiting team from South Africa crowned champions. The SA Academy won the tournament in Punta del Este by defeating composite side Moby Dick in the final. The South Africans had earlier defeated URBA in the Semi Final while Moby Dick reached the final with a win over the Sevens side of Los Pampas XV.
There was success for both international sides competing - Uruguay and Brazil. Uruguay started the second day with a 17-12 loss against URBA which saw it play in the Plate rather than Cup Semi Finals. In the Semi Finals Uruguay defeated Argentine province Entre Rios 26-5 but was defeated 12-05 by Los Pampas Sevens in the Plate Final.
Brazil finished the day by losing the Bowl Final against a club side from Montevideo, Old Boys. The Uruguayan side won the final 21-19 which ended what has been a tremendous day for the Brazilians. In earlier matches Brazil had defeated Salta 38-0 and Old Boys XXV 22-0. Both Brazil and Uruguay will be competing for the right to play in the Hong Kong Sevens in the upcoming Seven Viña event in the Chilean city of Viña del Mar.
The competition, unlike the Punta del Este event, is an official CONSUR sanctioned event which doubles as qualification for the world´s premier annual Sevens tournament. The Chilean hosted tournament will take place on January 18-19 and feature the eight leading South American rugby countries. Split into two pool Argentina will be the red-hot favorite in taking on Chile, Colombia and Venezuela in Pool A. Pool B sees Uruguay as the top ranked side and it will face Brazil, Paraguay and Peru.
