Gonzalo Tiesi to debut for Newcastle Falcons

Thirty-seven time capped Pumas mid-fielder Gonzalo Tiesi will make his debut appearance for the Newcastle Falcons on Friday. Tiesi has been named to start at outside centre for the Falcons in the LV= Cup clash against the Newport Gwent Dragons .

Tiesi has been named to start his first match of the Northern Hemisphere season. Despite having signed to play for the Newcastle Falcons in November the San Isidro mid-fielder is yet to play for the club due to injury. Tiesi was injured in the autumn internationals having come on as a replacement against England.

Now aged 28 Tiesi has been in the Pumas set up for virtually a decade. He was selected at the age of 19 to make his first test appearance against South Africa in December 2004 and the following year he was playing professional rugby in England. Tiesi played three seasons for London Irish before joining the Harlequins for the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 seasons.

While at the Harlequins Tiesi enhanced his reputation as one of the leading Argentine backs and subsequently made the move to France to play for Stade Français. He was unable to capture the same form in the Top 14 that he had enjoyed while in England with injuries complicating his game and seeing him leave the club before the end of his contract. He returned to Argentina in 2012 to recuperate and was recalled to the test team by Santiago Phelan in November, starting in the win over Wales in Cardiff.

Tiesi returned to England in early 2013 to play for London Welsh in the Aviva Premiership and after the club was relegated he represented Los Pumas in June, captaining the side that defeated Georgia in San Juan. Tiesi went on to start against Australia in Perth in the Rugby Championship.

With Tiesi off contract at the completion of this season he will be able to take part in the home series against Ireland and Scotland in June. Tiesi´s debut for Newcastle will see him play against former Pumas prop Francisco Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro who is to play tighthead prop for the Dragons.
