Ecuador Upset Costa Rica to close in on CONSUR B Birth

A notable upset occurred earlier today in San José, Costa Rica as Ecuador completed an upset victory over the host nation in the 2013 CONSUR C tournament.

Having defeated El Salvador by an impressive margin of 71-3 on Sunday Costa Rica was expected to make it two from two in the round two CONSUR C clash against South American nation Ecuador. Instead Los Piqueros (Ecuador) made history by defeating Los Ticos (Costa Rica) for the first time. The hard-fought 13-7 victory featured a scoreless second half as neither side was able to add to their points from the first half.

The result puts Ecuador in a virtual guaranteed position of winning promotion to the 2014 CONSUR B tournament. Standing in way of Los Piqueros is a victory over the winless El Salvador. With Los Torogoces losing 43-18 against Guatemala in a match played earlier in the day Ecuador can now prepare for the third round fixture knowing that a win or a draw will confirm Los Piqueros as the competition´s champions.

While the host nation now needs the bottom of the table El Salvador to complete an unlikely win over Ecuador to give Los Ticos a chance of winning there is still plenty to play for. The match between Costa Rica and El Salvador will act as a battle for second place. Guatemala will be out to prove that the nation´s growth has given it an improved team and will be certain to not roll over.

All four participating countries are yet to acquire IRB membership and for this reason none of them can be found in the IRB World Rankings. In time all should be added as rugby continues to expand rapidly to continuously include new permanent members. The progress that the sport has experienced throughout Latin America since Argentina reached the Semi Finals of Rugby World Cup 2007 is unprecedented as the number one rugby nation from the Americas has had a highly positive impact on the sport. which underlines what is on offer by allocating Rugby World Cup 2023 to Argentina.
