With Argentina currently preparing to face England at Twickenham on Saturday the confirmation that Gonzalo Tiesi has signed to return to play in England adds to the fixture. The 28 year old will play for the Newcastle Falcons for the remainder of this season.
Tiesi will be on the bench this weekend as the specialist outside centre replacement but he will also be covering inside centre. Should he make an appearance he will earn his 37th test cap in a career that dates back to 2004 when he debuted at the age of 19 against South Africa. Starting in the centres this weekend will be Santiago Fernández and Marcelo Bosch, the later of which is also contracted to an English club. Bosch joined Saracens after having played for Biarritz for seven years.
Like Bosch, Tiesi has also been playing professional rugby for a long time. He has, however, played for a variety of teams. During Rugby World Cup 2011 both Tiesi and Bosch were contracted to French sides with Tiesi playing for Stade Français. He arrived in 2010 after having previously played for London Irish from 2005-2008 and the Harlequins from 2008-2010. Injury ended his stay in France early and after returning to Buenos Aires in early 2012 he signed to return to England and played for London Welsh in last seasons Aviva Premiership.
Both Tiesi and Bosch are on the right side of 30, meaning they are serious players to give Argentina two options for the 13 shirt in 2014 and 2015. Both are senior members and started together as the mid-field combination against France in November 2012. Tiesi was given the honor of captaining Argentina against Georgia earlier this year. Together with Horacio Agulla Tiesi is the only surviving back from Rugby World Cup 2007 in the current squad set to face England, Wales and Italy.
Tiesi´s move to the Newcastle Falcons comes at a time when the club is in need of winning more matches. The club is currently safe from relegation due to the Worcester Warriors´ being unable to win a match thus far. Newcastle is presently in 9th position on 13 competition points. Gloucester has 10, London Irish 11 and Worcester 2.
