The pool asking who will qualify for Rugby World Cup 2015 as Americas 2 has closed. Readers were asked to select Uruguay or the USA the two sides that will face-off in April 2014 with the winner securing a place in Pool B alongside Samoa, Scotland, South Africa and Asia 1, certain to be Japan.
The final results of the poll were, as to be expected, in favor of the USA with 70% of the 99 votes picking the USA Eagles to win the home and away qualifying series. It is a realistic margin considering the history between the two sides, the USA´s performances in recent seasons and the comparable players of the two countries and where they play their rugby.
The teams have met on twelve occassions previously with the USA winning eleven matches and Uruguay one. Los Teros´s victory was in August 2002 in Montevideo. It was part of the Americas qualifying process for Rugby World Cup 2003. The format for that particular World Cup had Canada, Chile, Uruguay and the USA all play each other home and away. Uruguay impressed to qualify as Americas 2 behind Canada which forced the USA into repercharge. Chlie had qualified for the final round and was able to win matches, including against the USA which helped Uruguay seal second place. The USA advanced to face Spain home and away and secured its place in Rugby World Cup 2003 with two impressive wins by scorelines of 62-13 and 58-13.
Unfortunately the IRB did not persist with the same format for Rugby World Cup 2007, 2011 or 2015. It has meant that Chile has not faced the USA since and has struggled to secure sufficient home and away international fixtures. Chile is also still not a part of the Americas Rugby Championship which will take place this month in Canada. It has, nonetheless hsoted the IRB Junior World Championship twice - in 2008 and 2013. No other nation has.
