The 2013 South American B Championship kicked-off earlier today with two matches being played in Paraguay. The nation´s capital is the site for this years tournament and the hosts are favorites to win the tournament.
Paraguay is looking to work its way back into the top table of South American Rugby. While CONSUR is yet to confirm how the 2014 and future editions of the CONSUR A tournament will operate there have been requests from Brazil and Chile for the tournament to be based on a home and away basis and for it to occur with teams having sufficient recovery time. One suggestion under consideration is for Brazil, Chile and Uruguay to play a home and away triangular tournament with the winner facing Argentina to determine the continental champion.
Paraguay is interested in this format but with it being quadrangular. It is hosting the current CONSUR B tournament with an eye to returning to CONSUR A after it has been overtaken by Brazil who is now firmly established as the fourth best in South America and has secured home tests against Mexico and Portugal in 2013.
Paraguay´s desire got off to a strong start in Asuncíon as the home side completed a 22-0 win over Peru. It was the second match of the day after Colombia had earlier won its match 32-14 against Venezuela. Like the CONSUR A tournament CONSUR B suffers from having a short turn-around for its competing sides. Round two will be played on Tuesday with Paraguay facing Venezuela and Peru taking on Colombia. Round three will then be played on Friday.
