|Scully v Ireland RWC 2011|
The short stint of Californian Blaine Scully with the Leicester Tigers has had the result of the English champions signing the USA Eagle on a short-term deal. He was signed after having impressed for Leicester playing Rugby Sevens. The 25 year old has agreed to a four month contract with Leicester and will rejoin the squad after the completion of the Rugby World Cup home and away qualification series against Canada. In joining the Tigers the USA will have three players competing in the Aviva Premiership. As a fullback who can cover wing Scully will be in competition with Scott Hamilton and Mathew Tait for the fullback position and Miles Benjamin, Gonzalo Camacho, Vereniki Goneva, Niall Morris and Adam Thompstone for wing.
Scully was a member of the USA Eagles squad at Rugby World Cup 2011 and was used as the second choice fullback behind Chris Wyles. Both players started two matches each in New Zealand with Scully starting against Ireland and Australia. His start against Ireland was due to Wyles having a minor injury while he was given a start against the Wallabies to allow Wyles to be 100% for the final match against Italy which was played after a short turn-around against the Australians.
He has been capped eleven times in total with his most recent appearance coming against Japan in the recent Pacific Nations Cup. Scully´s debut appearance at test level was agaisnt Russia in Worcester, England in 2011 but after playing eight tests in 2011 he did not feature for the USA Eagles in 2012. He is expected to play against Canada this coming Saturday and could well start at fullback with Wyles making the transition to centre.
