Argentina in line to play the Waratahs in Resistencia and Salta

Estadio del Centenario
The UAR will shortly confirm the northern Argentine cities of Resistencia and Salta as the venues to play host to the pre-Rugby Championship matches between Argentina and Australian Super Rugby side the Waratahs.  The Sydney based side is to replicate Stade Français in 2012 in that it will play two matches in Argentina against Los Pumas. The matches are to take place three and two weeks before the start of the 2013 Rugby Championship and serve to give Argentina´s genuine test players an opportunity of playing together for the first time this year.

The first match will take place on August 3 and has been rumoured to be played at the Estadio del Centenario in Resistencia, near the border with Paraguay. The venue was expected to play host to Argentina v Georgia last month but the match instead took place in San Juan. Should Los Pumas face the Waratahs at the venue it would be the national mens rugby team´s first appearance in Resistencia since 2011 when the recently completed stadium in Chaco province played host to the second match between Argentina and the French Barbarians. The Estadio Padre Ernesto Martearena in Salta will host the second match either six or seven days later. The venue was selected for the occassion over Tucumán which played host to the second test betwen Argentina and France in 2012. Also in consideration were venues in Santa Fé and Buenos Aires

With Los Pumas already having played in three different venues this year and set to use three others for the Rugby Championship the argument for Argentina to host Rugby World Cup 2023 continues to gain strength. Both matches against the Waratahs are likely to be well attended just like the venues were when Argentina last played at both stadiums. It also means that the local populations of will be able to see Argentina´s leading players. For players from northern Argentine the match in Salta will be very close to the heart. Salta is the home town of Juan Figallo and it is also not too far away from Tucumán and Santiago del Estero the home towns of Nicolás Sánchez, Julio Farías Cabello and Juan Manuel Leguizamón.

Argentina´s first match in the Rugby Championship will be against South Africa at the national stadium in Soweto on Saturday August 24. Seven days later Argentina will hsot the return match in the Andean city of Mendoza.
