DTH van der Merwe signs new two year deal with Glasgow

Canada´s quest to win two or more matches at Rugby World Cup 2015 took a massive boost this past weekend as its starting outside centre, DTH van der Merwe signed a new contract with the Glasgow Warriors which will see him staying in the largest Scottish city until the World Cup. The 26 year old has played in two Rugby World Cup´s but has only played in a total of 24 test matches due to the lack of opprtunities Canada recieves in comparison to a number of other Tier Two and all Tier One nations.

van der Merwe is likely to form a centres combination with Connor Trainor against the USA in the vital home and away matches in July which will determine who qualifies for England 2015 as Americas 1 and who will need to face the winner of the CONSUR qualification series which will be played in Montevideo in May between Brazil, Chile and the home side, Uruguay. van der Merwe debuted for Canada in 2006 against Barbados.

Since arriving in Glasgow in 2009 he had held down a starting place on the left wing. He has been a proflifici try scorer for the club and this season alone he has socred eight tries in nine appearances. He now needs only two more tries to become the highest try scorer of all time in the history of the Glasgow Warriors.

  1. I really rate van der Merwe highly. He is in my opinion, the best #13 outside Tier 2 nations.

The only thing is, I think he is wasted a bit on the wing with Glasgow. He is far more influential at centre where he plays for Canada. He is still very good at wing, but doesn't get as much ball as he could.

He is a very good player for Glasgow, and judging by the reactions on the Glasgow fans forum. They are all delighted he is staying (http://www.glasgowwarriors.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=7721).

By the way, I think you ought to edit this article. Glasgow isn't the capital of Scotland.
