Agustín Figuerola signs for Oyonnax

Figuerola in Brive colors
28 year old, fourth choice Argentine scrumhalf, Agustín Figuerola has signed a two year contract with French club, Oyonnax. Figuerola announced his move to the current Pro d2 leaders on his twitter account. It will see him play for his second French club after he played for Brive from 2010-2012. His move comes with Oyonnax on the verge of winning promotion to the Top 14 from France´s second division. Oyonnax is well out in front on 82 points with the second placed La Rochelle tied with Pau on 66. The winner at the end of the regular season wins promotion and Oyonnax is highly likely to be that team. At the helm for most of the season has been Argentina´s Benjamin Urdapilleta who has contributed immensely to Oyonnax´s success. Urdapilleta may well earn a recall to Los Pumas for the June internationals against England and Georgia.

Before playing for the Harlequins Urdapilleta played for Los Pampas XV at flyhalf in combination with Figuerola at scrumhalf. The pair could now go on to start for Oyonnax in the Top 14 in the 2013-2014 season as Figuerola´s contract is for two years. Figuerola was in the Pumas squad in 2012 but did not play a test. He was also in the squad in 2011 but was left out of rhte World Cup after Santiago Phelan opted to only take two scrumhalves to the World Cup. Figuerola made his test debut in November 2008 against Italy in Torino and appeared most recently in June 2010 in Mar del Plata against Scotland. His seven test appearances included two starts but Argentina won neither match and the team went on to win its subsequent match on both occassions after dropping Figuerola. His chances of regular game time for Oyonnax are strong with the clubs leading scrumhalf being Julien Audy. It looms as ideal for Figuerola to earn a test recall as he has slipped behind Nicolás Vergallo, Martín Landajo and Tomás Cubelli.
