Uruguay will not play in the 2013 IRB Nations Cup

Chile v Uruguay, 2012
While all details of Uruguay´s international season for 2013 are yet to be finalized it has been confirmed that Uruguay´s national team, Los Teros, will not play in the 2013 IRB Nations Cup in Romania. No official explanation had yet been given for this but it would appear that the reason is so that Uruguay can host Georgia, and possibly one other country, in June. Georgia is to play  against Argentina in June at a yet to be confirmed venue out of a list that includes Mar del Plata, Salta, Santa Fé and Tucumán. England will play at two of these venues which would suggest that a possible home series for Argentina will see Los Pumas playing England on June 08 and 15 possibly at Santa Fé and Salta while Georgia could then play on June 22 at either Mar del Plata or Tucumán.

Details of Georgia´s South American tour are expected to be finalized shortly. It toured North America in 2012 playing against Canada in Vancouver and against the USA in Glendale, Colorado. It is likely to also play two tests in South America this coming June with Uruguay Rugby´s new official home stadium Charrua being the logical place for Georgia to play. Form a South American perspective it would be good to see a third match with Chile also being able to host Georgia.

Uruguay´s international season will begin in May when it plays in the CONSUR A tournament against Brazil and Chile with the winner advancing to face the runner-up of NACRA which will be either Canada or the USA. The winner of NACRA will earn a place in Pool D of Rugby World Cup  2015 alongside France, Ireland, Italy and another European qualifier. The side that finishes second in the 2013-2014 European Nations Cup will qualify for the World Cup as Europe 2. Georgia is favorite to win the tournament and therefore qualify for Pool C alongside New Zealand, Argentina, Tonga and Africa 1 (possibly Madagascar or Namibia). Europe 2 is likely to go to Romania although all of Portugal, Russia and Spain could qualify instead. The third best from Europe will face Africa 2 while the loser of the winner of CONSUR A v the runner-up of NACRA will face Asia 2 (possibly Hong Kong). The winners of these matches will then meet in the Final Place Play-Off to play in Pool A of Rugby World Cup 2015 against Australia, England, Wales and Oceania 1 (certain to be Fiji).

Uruguay is favorite to win CONSUR A this year and thus face either Canada or the USA later on in 2013 for the right to be Americas 2. No dates have yet been confirmed but it will be similar to the qualification for Rugby World Cup 2007 and 2011 in that the teams will play two matches - one in South America and one in North America. The games are likely to be played in November as they were in 2009 with the USA winning both matches to qualify and send Uruguay into repercharge.  Uruguay will have preperation for the South v North American matches by playing in the 2013 Americas Rugby Championship. It will be the fourth edition of the tournament with the most recent one having been played in Canada in 2012. Uruguay could well host the event in Montevideo now that it has its own rugby stadium and training facilities are currently being established. It will be Uruguay´s second time participating in the Americas Rugby Championship after debuting in 2012.
