After having played in New Zealand´s domestic competition, the ITM Cup, in 2012 USA Eagles prop Eric Fry has signed his second professional contract, this time in England. The 25 year old Californian has signed for English Second Division side London Scottish. It is a good move for the veteran of Rugby World Cup 2011 as he can develop his game further after he played for the Manawatu Turbos alongside All Black reserve flyhalf Aaron Cruden in 2012. it is also a superb signing for the English club and the club has praised Fry´s ability to play both loosehead and tighthead prop in addition to his work ethic. London Scottish are not having the best season in the RFU Championship. The club is currently in 9th position out of 12 teams but is not likely to be relegated. It can forget about being promotted to the Aviva Premiership due to the huge gap between itself and the top four. While the undefeated Newcastle Falcons are well out in front the fourth placed Leeds Carnegie on 35 points are also significantly ahead of London Scottish who have 22.
Fry played for his country in the recent tour of Europe. He started at tighthead prop forming a useful combination with Shawn Pittman. They did well against Romania in the USA´s impressive and historical 34-3 victory at Bucharest. It was Fry´s 12th test match overall and 8th in the USA Eagles starting lineup. He made his debut against Tonga in the 2011 Churchill Cup while his first run on start came against Japan in August 2011. Pittman was used as a backup option at Rugby World Cup 2011 with his only match being against Australia in Wellington in what was a match lacking the USA´s leading players. In 2012 Fry featured in all six of the USA´s test matches. he started all of them in the frontrow, scoring a try against Russia in the victory at Colwyn Bay in Northern Wales.
Fry is certain to be an important player for his country in 2013. The USA weill face Canada to determine who qualifies for Rugby World Cup 2015 as Americas 1. The match will be played over a two match home and away series probably in July. The IRB is yet to confirm the dates and locations for the matches. Before July, however the USA will play test rugby in June with the exact list of opposition currently being worked through. WHoever ther USA plays it is certain to be with Fry in the team.
