Veteran Argentine international secondrower Patricio Albacete has won the prestigious Olimpia de Plata award, making him Argentina´s best rugby player of the year for 2012. He returned to action in the Heineken Cup this month after missing Argentina´s three test tour of Wales, France and Ireland. His loss was very clear as Argentina were simply not the same team without him. Albacete ahs long been a leading player in France and has arguably been the best secondrower in France since 2006. Standing 2,00 metres and weighing 115KG Albacete has the perfect build for a secondrower and 2012 saw him standout for his country in The Rugby Championship. He was one of the best players not only for Argentina but of all four competiting nations. The tournament also saw him earn his 50th test cap in Argentina´s fourth match of the tournament - against Australia on the Gold Coast. His performances were so good in the six matches of The Rugby Championship that he won the Olimpia de Plata despite missing the June and November Internationals.
Albacete was one of three finalists alongside his international captain Juan Martín Fernández Lobbe and the Argentine based Gutiérrez Teboada who plays for Newman in the URBA Top 14 and was the leading points scorer in the competition this year. The following video is an interview with Albacete that took place during The Rugby Championship.
