Pumas Squad reduced to 27

Photo: UAR
Santiago Phelan has reduced his squad to twenty-seven players for the third and final stage of The Rugby Championship. Argentina will host New Zealand in La Plata on September 29 and Australia in Rosario on October 06. The reduced squad sees two players being liberated to return to Top 14 duty. Tighthead prop Maximilano Bustos will return to Montpellier and centre Rafael Carballo will return to Bordeaux-Begles. Neither player featured at all for Los Pumas in the first four matches of the tournament. Neither player is being replaced they are simply not going to recieve any game time so have been released as a sign of good will on behalf of the UAR.

The squad features other players who have not yet played. Phelan has retained them obviously because there are strong possibilities of using them, unlike Bustos and Carballo. Crucially, Martín Bustos Moyano remains in the squad. He has been missed due to his superior goalkicking compared to Juan Martín Hernández and Martín Rodríguez Gurruchaga. The chance may well exist for him to now start. Gonzalo Camacho´s injured hand has proven to not be too serious which is interesting because there are four wingers in the squad yet Phelan has released one centre with only the two starting players retained. Backrower Alvaro Galindo has also returned to the squad after missing the matches in Wellington and the Gold Coast due to injury.
