Gonzalo Tiesi´s Future

The career of Gonzalo Tiesi is at an unknown point. The 27 year old outside centre is no longer a professional due to his long and difficult struggle against injuries. He entered Rugby World Cup 2011 under an injury cloud but was selected based on reputation and form. His performances for the Harlequins and Stade Français in the years between the 2007 and 2011 Rugby World Cup´s were strong. He was named in the 2009 Sky Sports Dream team as the best outside centre in England. The same year Tiesi was a finalist for the IRB Try of the year for his try against Scotland. He started in the same position in Argentina´s first World Cup match of the 2011 tournament against England. His campaign was short as he required knee surgery after going down in a hard tackle.

He returned to Paris and underwent surgery to get ready for the 2011-2012 French season with Stade Français. His time was liomited as he badly injured a shoulder and was subsequently released. He was not deemed fit enough to feature for Argentina in the 2012 Rugby Championship but remains very much in the Pumas frame. In his place Argentina ahs been playing Marcelo Bosch and the Biarritz back has been playing well, particularly when defending. The UAR paid for Tiesi to travel to Florida to undergo a rehabilitation program in Pensacola and is likely to be seriously considered for Argentina´s November 2012 Tour of Europe.

Now in Buenos Aires, Tiesi is playing for his local club, SIC in the URBA Top 14 and has been doing well. He has scored tries and has, importantly, been able to put regular performances together. His future could be of two possibilities. The first is that he remains in Buenos Aires and joins the PladAR program on a full-time contract. This would see him play in the 2013 Vodacom Cup and quite likely be Los Pampas XV´s captain. On the other hand, Tiesi could very well return to Europe to play professional rugby once more. His former club, Stade Français is struggling so far this season but has plenty of centres. Another team that has been unable to perform and certainly requires a quality centre is Perpignan. The Catalan club could certainly do with the services of Tiesi.

The following video shows two incidents from a Stade Fançais v Clermont match with Tiesi playing inside centre. The first incident is a shoulder charge from Rodrigo Roncero on Morgan Parra while the second display´s the quality of Tiesi as he makes a thunderous tackle on France´s leading centre, Aurélien Rougerie.

  1. Paul: Tiesi is one of these players that "haves bad luck", indubious. I saw in slive by TV the try that he scored for SIC vs. Newman, and I think that was a little "art work". Regards. Néstor
