Canada to host 2012 Americas Cup

Yesterday afternoon the IRB confirmed that the 2012 edition of the Americas Rugby Championship would be played in Canada. It is the third edition of the tournament after it was played in North America in 2009 and in Córdoba in 2010. It was not played in 2011 due to the Rugby World Cup. The tournament is purposely defined to act as a building block for Americas nations. It gives the countries players a unique opportunity of playing at a level between the domestic amateur game and international level. Indeed many players from the first two editions of the tournament have gone on to play at the top level.

The 2010 edition featured four countries - Argentina, Canada, Tonga and the USA. Three have returned with Tonga being replaced by an actual American country, Uruguay. All four teams will be fielding their A teams and as such none of the matches will be official internationals and IRB World Rankings will not be on the line. Rather, it is a competition to prepare Canada, Uruguay and the USA for World Cup qualifying matches. The involvement of Argentina is of benefit of everybody.
The tournament will be played on a round-robin basis and is to be staged in Langford, British Columbia. The following month the senior teams will be involved in November test matches.

Match Schedule
October 12 Argentina Jaguares v USA Selects
October 12 Canada Selects vs Uruguay A
October 16 Argentina Jaguares vs Uruguay A
October 16 Canada Selects vs USA Selects
October 20 Uruguay A vs USA Selects
October 20 Canada Selects vs Argentina Jaguares

  1. Canada is a great location, but it's hard to beat the beauty of Cordoba.

  2. Good tournament for USA and Canada to gauge their fringe players.

Would be nice to see Chile also added.

Do you know why it is Uruguay A playing and not Uruguay? Is it because they are unable to get enough of their first choice side available?

    1. It will be Uruguay really just without Rodrigo Capo.
