Los Pumas at 2001 Sevens World Cup in Mar del Plata

Felipe Contepomi vs South Africa
With the Argentine beach resort city of Mar del Plata looking to host an annual leg of the IRB World Sevens Series it is only fitting that readers be reminded that the same city has host previously and, in fact, hosted the 2001 Rugby Sevens World Cup. The tournament was a big success, being won by New Zealand who, unlike today, fielded its top players with the Jonah Lomu being a star in the tournament. Argentina also fielded its big name players. The two players to have captained Argentina at Rugby World Cup´s since then were both involved. Agustín Pichot and Felipe Contepomi were joined others such as Ignacio Corleto and Los Pumas succeeded in not only hosting a good World Cup but also fielding a strong team that would have long terms implications as Argentina went about building its best ever Rugby team for France 2007. The locals also responded as the tournament was well attended.

Rugby World Cup- Argentina 2023 fully supports the city´s bid to stage an annual leg of the IRB World Sevens Series.
