Brazil wanting to host a leg of the Sevens World Series

The IRB World Sevens Series is to expand to include ten legs for the 2012/2013 edition. With South American being the only continent currently excluded, it is likely that Argentina will host a leg. The tourist city of Mar del Plata has already put up its hand and this past week it officially applied to host a leg every October starting in 2012. The city should consider its chances high as it hosted the Sevens Rugby World Cup in 2001 and did so successfully. It also has previously hosted legs of the IRB World Sevens circuit.

Argentina´s neighbours and soccer rivals, Brazil, are wanting a piece of the action themselves with the country that is set to welcome the debut of Rugby Sevens at the Olympic Games also wanting to act as a future host of the IRB World Sevens Series. The Olympics will take place in 2016 but the governing body of Brazilian rugby, the CBRu has its sights set on either of the country´s two largest cities - São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro hosting a leg in the future. It will have to wait however, as the IRB are only going to enable candidates with no experience of previously hosting to apply in 2014.
