Following the posting of a video of Todd Clever scoring a great try in the Japanese Top League three weeks back a reader of this site put in a request to see more tries from the USA captain. The following video is a collection of some of Todd Clever´s best tries scored for Japanese club Suntory Sungoliath in the year of 2011. It showcases his ball running abilities to get past his opponent through speed, through a handof or simply by using his share strength. The USA Eagles captain has been playing out of position for the Japanese side in recent weeks as the verstaile backrower has been playing in the secondrow.
Now into his second season of what is a two tear deal, the USA Eagle may well have a big decision to make as he is likely to attract offers from a number of different places. It could be a return to Super Rugby or a European career with his abilities likely to fit in well in France´s Top 14 Orange. Before joining Suntory Sungoliath, Clever previously played for The Lions in South Africa starting in 2009. He was the first ever American to play Super Rugby. He previously played in New Zealand´s National Championship for North Harbour after having taken up the sport as a high school student in California. He represented the USA under 19 age grade team in 2000 before going on to play college rugby for the University of Nevada in Reno. At Reno Clever was a three-time College All-American. It set him not only up for his rugby career on foreign soil but also to play for his country as he made his debut for the United States of America in the lead up to Rugby World Cup 2003 against Los Pumas when he was still only a 20 year old.
