South American planning ready for 2012

Preperation for CONSUR´s 2012 events are well underway with the governing body fof South American rugby on track to deliver a complete list of events that will see rugby continue to growth throughout the region. Brazil, Chile and Venezuela have been confirmed as all hosting important events in the South American program, another sign that the region is developing and not being operated in the interests of maintaining Argentina´s hegemonic like place in South American rugby circles.

Brazil is to host the 2012 South American Sevens for both mens and womens rugby at a yet to be confirmed location. The 2011 event was a major success as Brazil´s southern city of Bento Gonçalves hosted the event. The tournament made history for Brazil as the home team defeated Argentina for the first time in history. The 2012 event could well be played in São Paulo which is home to four of Brazil´s five top sides or or São José dos Campos which is the home of the Brazilian champions. Brazil will also host a Cross Border tournament in May the city of Foz do Iguaçu which borders both Argentina and Paraguay.

Chile is to host the South American Championship (CONSUR A) in a yet to be determined city with Santiago and Viña del Mar being the strong contenders. The 2011 event was held in the Argentine city of Puerto Iguazu located across the river from Foz do Iguaçu. Brazil completed a record breaking win over Paraguay en route to booking a place in the expanded CONSUR A event which will see Brazil face not only both Chile and Uruguay but also Argentina. CONSUR´s B event, meanwhile, is to be held by Venezuela latter in the year.
