Felipe Contepomi runs over Ronan O´Gara

The historical 2009 Heineken Cup Quarter Final between Irish provinces Leinster and Munster was Felipe Contepomi´s final match for Leinster before leaving Ireland to play for Toulon in France. The Puma entered the match in good form having contributed to his sides success´ in both the Celtic League and in the Heineken Cup itself. Contepomi started the match well as he slotted a dropgoal and was taking on O´Gara well, forcing the USA born flyhalf backwards on numerous ocassions. It all came to a premature end in an unfortunate way, however, as Contepomi was forced to leave the field still in the first half with a knee injury. The injury ended his season there and then and kept him out of action for six months which also meant he missed Argentina´s June test matches vs England and Los Pumas´ 2009 November tour of England, Wales and Scotland.

The Contepomi vs O´Gara moment lives on in the memory of Irish fans and deserves to be shown here on Argentina 2023. It took place in the first minute of the match with the Pumas captain targetting O´Gara and throwing him back with his hit-up. It was a part of Leinster´s game plan of taking on Munster with a physical apporach and it proved to be successful as Leinster went on to dominate the match and book a place in the Heineken Cup final vs English side the Leicester Tigers. Leinster would go on to win its first ever Heineken Cup title.

  1. to be fair, I think any player who's played against Munster or Ireland has run over O'Gara!

  2. Jaque Fourie (spelling) ran over him to win the Lions series for the Boks. But he's a centre and Contenpomi is an outside half.

  3. plenty of people have run over O'Gara trust me he's like a doormat
