Bayonne to trial Gabriel Ascárate

Gabriel Ascárate
Currently struggling in the Top 14, Bayonne are looking to give their backline a bit of a boost and have started by giving a two week trial to Argentine centre Gabriel Ascárate.

Ascárate was a mainstay at centre for the successful Pampas XV side which won the Vodacom Cup. On the back of his performances for the Pampas XV he was named in the Pumas initial wider 40 man squad before it was trimmed down to just the World Cup squad last year.

He was nearly signed by Lyon before the start of the season, however that move fell through. If Bayonne give Ascárate a full contract he will become the 12th member of the victorious 2011 Pampas XV squad to be signed to a professional contract.

Meanwhile Nicolás Vergallo is being looked at by Agen as a possible replacement for scrum half revelation Maxime Machenaud who is probably going to join Racing-Métro at the end of the season. Vergallo is Argentina's first choice scrum half but is currently fourth choice at Toulouse after being left aside by the emergence of Jean-Marc Doussain and Nicolas Bézy, and the signing of Australian international Luke Burgess.

  1. The trial was unsuccessful for Ascárate who doesn't seem to be having much luck with Top 14 clubs
