Hugo Porta vs New Zealand - 1978

He has gone down in rugby history as the first player to be considered world class that Argentina ever produced. His achievements for Los Pumas were truely remarkable as he was able to transform Argentina from being considered a minnow rugby nation to setting the side on its path to where it is today. He was Argentina´s first  member of the IRB Hall of Fame and is universally considered as one of the greatest flyhalves of all time. His goalkicking abilities made his such a crucial player as any time Argentina were inside an opponents half Porta could be trusted to inflict pain on the opposition with a kick. Teams had to be on the constant alert as he was also very talented with dropkicks.

Porta made his international debut as a 20 year old vs Chile in 1971 and also faced Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay that year. The following year he was a part of the Argentina team which defeated South Africa (the team was known as the South African Gazelles) 18-16 in one of two matches. In 1982 he then kicked 21 points to defeat South Africa in Bloemfontein for a team known as the South American Jaguares due to the controversy surrounding apartheid. But it was his European tour in 1976 that first really saw his name underlined as a player of note. Argentina had been leading against Wales, then the best European side, before going down 20-19 following two late tries to the home side.

Argentina´s famous 24-13 victory over Australia in 1979 was the match that have been said to have put Argentina on the map. The best player on the field was Hugo Porta as the flyhalf converted two tries, kicked a dropgoal and a penalty. Bigger things were yrt to come, however, as in 1983 Porta helped Argentina make history as Los Pumas crushed Australia 18-3 in Brisbane.  Two years latter Porta kicked Argentina into a 21-21 draw vs New Zealand. Porta played in the first two Rugby World Cup´s but was not able to make a notable contribution as Argentina´s only success was a win vs Italy in 1987.

While it took his success´ in the early 1980´s for Portta to become a household name, he had already made it known to onlookers that there was something brewing. Such an example was his performances in Argentina´s 1978 tour of New Zealand. The mighty All Blacks were too strong but Los Pumas did better than their reputation suggested and Porta proved to be a world class talent. He landed kicks from halfway and did what Jonny Wilkinson made himself famous for - dropkicking goals off both feet and doing so with little time or space. Truely a rugby legend, Porta paved the way for the future of Los Pumas as his career inspired many future stars.

Punta del Este Sevens dates and fixtures

Lucas Duque vs Uruguay in 2011
2012, as always, starts in South America with the Punta del Este Sevens in Uruguay. The two day tournament is to include the test teams of Brazil, Chile and Uruguay as well as academy style teams representing Argentina and South Africa. Argentina´s team is to be known as UAR 7 while South Africa´s team will be called the SA Sevens Academy. The tournament is to be structured so that each of the countries play each other once. The remaining fifteen teams are divided into five pools of three anbd they will, amongst themselves dispute the Cup Final and will not face the five competing countries.  it is therefore to be a Sevens event separated in two parts - country and club.

The fifteen teams are a mixture of clubs and teams specifically organizwed for the event. Clubs that have produced current Pumas players will participate. Juan Imhoff´s club (Duendes) and Martín Rodríguez Gurruchaga´s club (Atlético del Rosario) being such examples. URBA (Buenos Aires) won the 2011 Punta del Este Sevens while Brazil did surprizingly well with the likes of Lucas Duque and Fernando Portugal doing well.

Rugby World Cup 2011 - Australia 67-5 USA

The third match of Rugby World Cup 2011 for the USA was against two time World Champion, Australia in the New Zealand capital of Wellington. It was a game that the USA was not expected to compete well in due to the level of rugby that Australia plays. The Wallabies had come off a shock loss against Ireland in its previous match which put Ireland in pole position to win the pool. Australia were, therefore, out to not only win the match vs the North Americans but to win it well. Matters were not helped by the schedule which had been handed to the USA Eagles. While they had had time to recover from their 13-6 win over Russia, the USA were to play Italy only four days after facing Australia. The USA decided to field a second-string team to face Australia so that it could have its best players all 100% fit and ready to face the Italians.

While the USA were defeated by a big margin the 67-5 loss was smaller than what it would have been in previous World Cup´s. The second tier proved it had closed the gap on the first and there was plenty of reason to believe that it could be closed even more by giving the easier match schedules to the likes of Canada, Fiji, Georgia, Japan, Romania, Russia Samoa, Tonga and the USA. If these sides were to have sufficient trime between each match to always be able to field their best players then the chances of a superior contest would certainly be amplified.

The USA fielded an entirely different backline to that which had been used in its two previous matches as well as the one which would face Italy. It was a similar story in the forwards with the first choice player starting being secondrower Hayden Smith. The big name USA players such as Todd Clever, Paul Emerick, Mike Petri, Taku Ngwenya,  Lou Stanfill and Chris Wyles had all been left out. Aside from Hayden Smith, the USA was still able to field two players from big name clubs with Stade Français´ Scott LaValla starting in the secondrow and Agen´ Kevin Swiryn playing on the left wing. It was not enough however, not to face an Australian team packed with world class players with the likes of Kurtley Beale, Adam Ashley-Cooper,  Drew Mitchell, Quade Cooper, Will Genia, Rocky Elsom and Nathan Sharpe all starting.

JJ Gagiano en route to the try line
Australia ran out easy winners scoring eleven tries to one. But the USA did get to have a moment of celebration as backrower, JJ Gagiano scored a superb try. The number eight managed to get passed Australia´s highly regarded Rocky Elsom as the USA had been putting the Wallabies under tremendous pressure from a scrum close to the tryline. The try was scored in the 22nd minute which made the scores 10-5 to the Wallabies. At this point in time the match was yet to fully open up and it was plausible to suggest that the USA could compete despite lacking its top players. Australia did go into halftime well on top, however, as they were leading 22-5 with a bonus point already secured. The USA were blown off the park in the final quarter, however, as the Wallabies superior fitness resulted in five tries as the Australians rebounded well from their loss to Ireland.

Argentina´s best sporting moments of 2011

Adios Mario
So much for Argentina being a soccer dominated country. The round ball code is the number one sport in the country and across the region but it is certainly not the only sport of note played by Argentina at internaitonal level or followed by the people of the country. Following Rugby World Cup 2011 the tributes to Los Pumas continue to flow with the lattest to appear on youtube being a sporting video featureing the best moments in Argentine sport in the year of 2011. The video underlines the importance of rugby in Argentina. It is not a goal from the world´s top soccer player, Lionel Messi getting the attention but the determination and passion of Los Pumas.

The Argentine national team were eliminated at the Quarter Finals by the home team and eventual champions, New Zealand but they went down fighting. The video pays tribute to this as it illustrates not only tries but also the struggles players go through with losses, injuries and retirement. Such was the tournament for the team with the high moments of Lucas González Amorosino´s amazing try which took place in the same match as the low of Juan Fernández Lobbe´s knee injury which forced him out of the World Cup and out of rugby for six months. Rather than  focus on Leonardo Senatore´s linebreak which created Julio Fariás´ try vs the All Blacks the theme of the Quarter Final was Mario Ledesma who left rugby after playing in four World Cup´s and being 38 years old. He was substituted for Agustín Creevy in the 69th minute and left the field in tears knowing he would never again wear the Pumas shirt. His emotional post match interview is featured as it should be - as one of the biggest moments in the sporting year of 2011. Super Mario gave it his all and is the measure for all future Pumas forwards.

The UAR confirm venues for The Rugby Championship

The rumours have been confirmed by the Unión Argentina de Rugby (UAR) that Argentina´s three home fixtures for the groundbreaking 2012 The Rugby Championship will be Mendoza, La Plata and Rosario. Argentina´s first ever home match will not take place in Buenos Aires or nearby but will be taken to the country´s fourth largest city of Mendoza which is located 1,100KM west of Argentina´s capital, Buenos Aires and 380KM east of Chile´s capital, Santiago. It will be the setting for Los Pumas vs the Springboks. Argentina´s second home match will come after playing both New Zealand and Australia in away matches with Los Pumas taking on the same two sides. The All Blacks will play at La Plata, 60KM from Buenos Aires and Australia will play at Argentina´s third largest city, Rosario which is 300KM from Buenos Aires.

Mendoza´s estadio Malvinas Argentina last hosted international rugby in 2007 with Argentina playing a June international match vs Italy and impressing with a comfortable win. Rosario´s Gigante de Arroyito most recently hosted Los Pumas in 2008 with the home side winning 21-15 vs Scotland. La Plata´s state of the art stadium has never hosted an international rugby match but the city was used for a 2010 match between Argentina A and France.
Luis Castillo, UAR President
UAR President, Luis Castillo, was quoted on the official site of Argentina rugby as saying that “We are happy for having defined the cities and stadiums in which they (Los Pumas) will play its test matches during the 2012 The Rugby Championship. It will be a record year for Argentine rugby, in which Los Pumas will play twelve games in total, of which six are in the country, against the best powers of the world. It is certainly going to be a feast for all lovers of this sport”.

It is exciting times for fans of global rugby with the confirmation that Argentina is not only going to play in The Rugby Championship but is to take its home matches to the people rather than use one city for all its home matches. It underlines the strength of Argentina as the number one option to host Rugby World Cup 2023 and supports the ideas that have been put forward by Argentina 2023 since its creation in mid 2010. The desire of having an increased number of competitive teams in global rugby depends greatly on the sport changing its outlook and with Los Pumas spreading its matches it is outdoing a number of the more traditional powers and is, consciously or not, preparing itself as a candidate to host a Rugby World Cup.

2015 hosts, England, have not hosted a test match outside of Twickenham for well over a decade. The last occassion was in 1998 when England´s World Cup qualifying matches vs Holland and Italy took place at Huddersfield. Aside from that England has hosted one match vs New Zealand at Manchester in 1997 and Argentina moved its match to the same venue in 2009. Prior to the 1997 match the last time that London´s Twickenham or Wembley did not host a home match for England was in seventy-four years earlier, in 1923 when England played Ireland at Leicester.

Los Pumas World Cup 2011 Review: New Zealand vs Argentina

Seven days after defeating Georgia, Los Pumas faced off against World Cup hosts, New Zealand in the fourth and Final Quarter Final. The winner would go through to face Australia at the Semi Final stage. The host nation was the only undefeated team still in the tournament as the three other Semi Finalists (Australia, France and Wales) had all lost a during the pool stage. This underlined New Zealand´s position as favorites to win the tournament and the All Blacks were expected to be too strong for Argentina in the Quarter Final match at Auckland. Most of the talk during the week leading up to the match had been about Argentina´s late win against Scotland and the post World Cup inclusion of Argentina in what would be an expanded Tri Nations.

New Zealand had been rocked by the loss of star flyhalf, Dan Carter in the lead up to the All Blacks match vs Canada. But Argentina were hardly entering the game in the best possible manner. Argentina were without their own star flyhalf as Juan Martín Hernández missed the entire World Cup. Argentina were also missing two French based backrowers to injury - Juan Fernández Lobbe and Alvaro Galindo which meant two of Argentina´s starting backrowers vs New Zealand were Argentine based players. A loss of players, however, is no excuse in a World Cup, less so in a Quarter Final and Argentina crafted a game plan to try to topple the All Blacks. The plan proved to be highly effective on defence as New Zealand struggled to break the line and took over three quarters of the match to score a try.

Leonardo Senatore on the break
Argentina only gave away five first half penalties but the penalties proved to be crucial as All Blacks scrumhalf, Piri Weepu was able to see that the All Blacks were in control on the scoreboard.  Leading 6-0 after 29 minutes the home side was made to fear as Argentina scored a superb try through Tucumáns Julio Farias Cabello. The backrower had dived over from a  ruck close to the line which was the result of a linebreak from Los Pumas 8, Leonardo Senatore. Senatore had broken past Kieran Read and Richie McCaw from a scrum two metres inside Argentina´s half. After getting past the two All Blacks backrowers, Senatore passed well to Felipe Contepomi who gave a hot potato pass to Marcelo Bosch who similary fed Santiago Fernández who in turn spun it to Martín Rodríguez Gurruchaga who was tackled two metres short of the try line. Farias´s try was converted by Contepomi from outwide which gave Argentina a 7-6 lead.

Weepu added another penalty shortly after the start of the secondhalf but Argentina were able to make it a two point game following an impressive 55 metre penalty from centre Marcelo Bosch. The All Blacks then looked to close out the match with Weepu adding two more penalties with New Zealand holding an 18-10 lead in the 60th minute. Argentina were unable to get the try they needed and with New Zealand finally coming within range of scoring their first try, Rodríguez Gurruchaga went for an intercept rather than stay in the defensive line. He failed and Kieran Read went over in the 67th minute for New Zealand´s first try. The result was secured as Argentina were by now too far behind. New Zealand were able to score one more, however, as with three minutes remaning Cory Jane passed a miracle ball to Brad Thorn who went over to score.  The final score of 33-10 was not an accurate reflection of the match. Argentina had defended brilliantly despite losing scrumhalf, Nicolás Vergallo for ten minutes to a yellow card. Los Pumas completed a total of 134 tackles in the match compared to the All Blacks´ total of 54.

Argentina exited the World Cup having had a mixed tournament but one that was, nevertheless, successful. Los Pumas had eliminated Scotland at the pool stage - something never done before and had scored some special tries. In general Los Pumas were a young side and the vast majority of players are expected to be playing at the next World Cup, England 2015. The players will have the chance to develop and Argentina should be stronger following the long awaited addition of the South Americans to the Tri Nations in what has since been titled The Rugby Championship. Argentina´s exit from New Zealand 2011 suggests Argentina will be entering The Rugby Championship to do much more than simply make up the numbers.

French and English Second Division Wrap

Mike MacDonald makes his 100th appearance for Leeds Dec. 26.
Mike MacDonald made his 100th
appearance for Leeds this Monday
In the English Championship, there were players from the Americas playing in every match, meanwhile ProD2 took a Christmas break.

Championship roundup

Bristol widenend the gap at the top of the table with a 26-6 win against Bedford, 32 year old veteran Argentine lock Mariano Sambucetti was again ever present in the Bristol second row and has started every league match for Bristol so far this season. Canadian full back James Pritchard captained Bedford from full back.

Cornish Pirates comfortably beat Plymouth Albion 33-12, there were several Canadians playing, Tyler Hotson and Sean-Michael Stephen were at lock for Plymouth whilst number 8 Aaron Carpenter was sin binned in an undisciplined display by Plymouth who conceded two yellow cards and a red, for the Cornish Pirates Matt Evans played centre.

Like Sambucetti, another player who has started every league match so far for his team is Argentine centre Juan Pablo Socino, however he couldn’t prevent his side Nottingham going down 19-11 to his old side Rotherham.

American loosehead Mike MacDonald became the seventh Leeds player to 100 appearances Leeds as he captained them on their Boxing day 9-9 draw to Doncaster.

Also on Boxing Day London Welsh surpisingly drew to bottom of the table strugglers Esher 13-13, this result was the first match which Esher haven't lost all season and they have now doubled their points tally ... to 4. American prop Shawn Pittman started the match at tighthead for London Welsh and whilst Argentine international Guillermo Roan came on as a late sub as loosehead. For Esher Phil and Jamie Mackenzie both started at centre and scrum half respectively.

London Scottish comfotably defeated Moseley 29-16. Adam Kleeberger made his debut for the club at 6 and had a good match, Puma Agustín Gosio was also playing on the wing.

Rosario, La Plata and Mendoza to host Australia, New Zealand and South Africa

 Twitter
The social network of Twitter appears to have leaked the venues for Argentina´s home matches in the 2011 The Rugby Championship. One of the Unión Argentina de Rugby´s (UAR) vice Presidents, Carlos Navesi seems to have let the cat out of the bag with a tweet saying that his city, Mendoza, will host Argentina´s first ever match in the Premier Southern Hemisphere tournament  which weill be Argentina vs South Africa. In addition the tweet says Los Pumas will host New Zealand at La Plata and Australia at Rosario. Nothing is thus far 100% official but the three venues are expected to all be confirmed in the coming days. Confirmation would continue the tradition of Argentina utilizing venues throughout the country for international matches. This is a huge bonus for a potential Rugby World Cup host nation.

Should the above be true then it is going against the recommendation of SANZAR of having two Pumas matches in the Buenos Aires area. La Plata is the capital of the Buenos Aires province but neither Mendoza nor Rosario are in the province or located close to the city itself. Nevertheless the stadiums are big and capable and have hosted their share of big events in the past. Córdoba and Chaco are also being talked about as  venues to host the June international matches vs Italy and France. The two are expected to be confirmed alongside Buenos Aires for the three test series that month.

Aviva Premiership Round Eleven Wrap - Eagles and Pumas.

Horacio Agulla celebrates
The eleventh round of the Aviva Premiership was split with one match being played on Saturday, two on Monday and the remaining three matches all being played on Tuesday. The long Christmas weekend was kinder to some teams than it was to others with some mid-tables sides securing big wins at the expense of others. The Northampton Saints, Leicester Tigers, Sale Sharks and Gloucester all had important wins to climb the ladder. The round did not see so many players from the Americas in action but it, nevertheless, featured international players from both Argentina and the USA with Horacio Agulla and Ignacio Mieres impressing for their respective clubs.

Northampton Saints 22-13 Bath
Northampton´s Aviva Premiership season continue to improve as the hangover of the players who missed out on early season matches due to Rugby World Cup 2011 is wearing off. The Saints have been able to rise significantly up the standings and are now genuine Semi Finals contenders according to their position on the table. Friday´s match featured two USA Eagles players with each team having an Eagles forward on the bench. Samu Manoa came on in the 59th minute for the Saints while replacement hooker Chris Biller was unused by Bath. Manoa picked up a yellow card in only his second minute on the field.

Sale Sharks 27-19 Newcastle Falcons
The Falcons suffered another defeat to remain at the foot of the table and in serious danger of being relegated to the second division. Sale, in contrast, continue to impress and look like Semi Final material. Uncapped Argentine fullback, Joaquín Tuculet did not play for Sale.

Gloucester 39-10 London Wasps
A massive win at Kingsholm  almost saw Gloucester enter the top four while the London Wasps continue to stay outside of the Semi Final´s and Heinken Cup qualifying frame. Former Pumas hooker, Matias Cortese did not feature for Gloucester.

London Irish 29-22 Exeter Chiefs
Exeter´s loss sees the club slip from the top four down to eighth position in the standings but well clear of the relegation zone. London irish, in contrast, have risen to third. Pumas World Cup wigner, Gonzalo Camacho played the full 80 minutes for the Chiefs as did Ignacio Mieres who continues to press for a place in Argentina´s test team. Mieres kicked 17 points for Exeter. Canada´s Jebb Sinclair again mised out due to a thumb injury which requires surgery. He is expected to return for London Irish in march.
Worcester Warriors 13-32 Leicester Tigers
The Worrcester Warriors suffered their worst loss of the season as the Tigers continue to rise up the Aviva Premiership standings. The club at long last are in the top four. Pumas winger, Horacio Agulla played on the right wing and scored Leicester´s fourth try with one minute left to secure his team a valuable bonus point. Argentine loosehead prop, Marcos Ayerza missed the game as he continues to recover from injury. Argentine born Italian trighthead prop, Martín Castrogiovanni was on the bench for Leicester.

Harlequins 11-19 Saracens
The home of our great sport, Twickenham was the setting for al all-London encounter with the Harlequins hosting Saracens on Tuesday evening. The occassion was a success with a record crowd of 82,000 attending the match. The match itself, for the Quins, was a failure as they lost an Aviva Premiership match for the first time this season. Tomas Vallejos Cinalli played the full match in the secondrow for the Harlequins while Benjamin Urdapilleta did not feature. USA fullback, Chris Wyles played the full secondhalf after entering from the bench for Saracens while the Argentina born former Italian international, Carlos Nieto started at tighthead prop.

Americas players in Europe: video summary (23-27 December)

Juan Pablo Orlandi was part of a Racing scrum which much like the team continues to be quite inconsistent, it was giving them good ball and penalties early on but later the tide turned and the scrum conceded penalties.
video

Juan Imhoff made a great 60 metre break and should have set up a try, but for Juan Martín Hernández messing up a very easy opportunity from a cross kick five metres out unopposed. The play at least resulted in a penalty though.
video

Belisario Agulla scored his first try for Agen from a clever chip kick by scrum half Maxime Machenaud.
video

Lucas González Amorosino had a mixed match, he was out of position for the first Toulouse try.
video

But in attack Amorosino combined well with Martín Bustos Moyano and Timoci Nagusa, Amorosino creating space for Nagusa has been a regular occurrence of late.
video

Another regular occurrence though, is Amorosino getting caught holding on receiving a kick and conceding a penalty which happened yet again on Friday.
video

Martín Bustos Moyano got some tricky kicks, and overall had a good day with the boot missing just one conversion.
video

Rodrigo Roncero did some great work for a prop to chase a kick and put in a big hit on Dane Haylett-Petty which resulted in a penalty.
video

Felipe Contepomi's great form continued and he scored the try of the week according to rugbyrama.fr, he was also named as one French rugby newspaper Midi Olympique's top 10 signings of the season.
video

Argentine tighthead Francisco Gómez Kodela was sin binned for elbowing Felipe Contepomi.
video

Leonardo Senatore didn't have his best match for Toulon and conceded a penalty for holding on after a pick and go off the back of the scrum.
video

Brive substitute Pablo Cardinali was part of a scrum which got the better of Clermont, who have many injuries to their props and miss Domingo badly. The Brazilian Duque brothers were in attendance at this match ahead of their potential historic move to France.
video

Hanno Dirksen had a dismal late cameo for the Ospreys on Boxing Day, knocking on twice in his only two touches of the ball.
video

Ignacio Mieres had a good day with the boot for Exeter, getting 6 from 7.
video

However Mieres was at fault for the second London Irish try, Shontayne Hape ran through a very weak tackle by him, with only 7 points the difference in the match, it turned out to be crucial.
video

Horacio Agulla continued his good form for Leicester, he much like his brother earlier in the week (see above) scored from a chip kick, which won Leicester a bonus point against Worcester.

Rugby World Cup 2011 - USA 13-6 Russia

Mike Petri on his way to scoring for the USA

The eagerly awaited rebirth of the Cold War was recieving World wide headlines in the leadup to the match between the USA and Russia at New Plymouth. It was the USA´s second match of Rugby World Cup 2011 as the team had debuted vs Ireland four days earlier and competed very well in going down 22-10. Russia were the new kids on the block. It was the first time Russia had ever played at a Rugby World Cup. The Bears and Eagles had been drawn in a demanding group alongside three first tier sides in Australia, Ireland and Italy which meant the sides match vs the USA Eagles was considered the most important as it was the only one which was considered winable.

The organizers had made it tough for the USA as playing twice with such a small turn around is extremely demanding in a physical contact sport like rugby. It seemed to have an impact on the match as the game was not as much of an attacking contest as had been expected. The two sides had met in the USA in 2010 and in England in June 2011 as part of the Churchill Cup. On both occassions the scorelines were much higher and there were lots of tries scored. The wet and cold field conditions had a lot to do with this but not as much as the occassion. It was a must win game for both sides. In the career of a rugby player the chance of winning a match at a Rugby World Cup is a precious thing and it is even more important to third tier sides such as the USA and Russia.

The Europeans took an early lead as Russian flyhalf, Yuri Kushnarev slotted a penalty in the third minute of play. The USA hit back in the eventh minute to level the scores with fullback Chris Wyles kicking a penalty for the Eagles. The North Americans then left their mark on the tournament with one of the best tries of New Zealand 2011. The USA Eagles broke clear from their own 22 metre line and spun the ball through the backs before scrumhalf, Mike Petri received it and was able to outrun two defenders to score what would be the only try of the match. Wyles was successful with the conversion as the USA held a 13-13 lead after 19 minutes. From there the USA were happy to play percentages for the rest of the match. They played to protect their lead and were in firm control despite only being able to add points through goalkicking. The secondhalf saw both sides add three points to their totals with Wyles kicking a penalty and Russian centre Konstantin Rachkov landing one for his side. Both sides missed a number of opportunities as conditions combined with the gilbert balls which were highly  criticized by, among others, Jonny Wilkinson as not being up to standard.

Neither player from either side was thinking about the lack of points scored. The 13-6 win was a great success for the USA while it was a major let-down for Russia. It highlighted how important such matches are for second and third tier teams who play at World Cup´s. Both sides are expected to continue developing and qualify for Rugby World Cup 2015 which will be hosted by England. Such a fixture would be another must see one should it occur in England 2015. Curiously, in not conceeding a try, the USA was the only side that Russia failed to score a try against. Russia went on to score some wonderful tries against Ireland, Italy and Australia.

Rabo Direct Pro 12 : Round 11 Wrap

Luciano Orquera
The eleventh round of the Rabo Direct Pro 12 took place over the extended weekend with two matches being played on Friday and the remaining four matches all being played earlier today. The round was set up so that every match was a derby featuring two sides from the same country. The round featured a number of players from the Americas with the most notable player - probably the best of the round being Luciano Orquera from Córdoba who plays his test rugby for Italy rather than Argentina. Orquera saw Aironi win its second match of the season to close the gap between itself and the Newport-Gwent Dragons to two championship points. Should Aironi win and the Dragons lose next round then Aironi will be off the bottom of the table.

Aironi 27-13 Benetton Treviso
Aironi´s players were able to have a great christmas dinner after they completed an impressive win over Italian rivals at Viadana. Luciano Orquera kicked nine penalty goals to score every point for Aironi as the up and down Italian international flyhalf had one of his better matches of the season. Orquera formed an Argentine 10-12 combination with Gabriel Pizarro playing inside centre. Both players lasted the full 80 minutes. Rosario´s Alberto di Bernardo was a replacement for Benetton Treviso and slotted a conversion after he came on to play the final 21 minutes. Three other Argentine players features for the visitors with  Diego Vidal starting at hooker and Ignacio Fernandez-Rouyet at tighthead prop while Gonzalo Padro came off the bench in the first half.

Cardiff Blues 28-9 Newport-Gwent Dragons
Despite resting a number of regular first choice players the Cardiff Blues were able to also pick up a comfortable victory on Friday. With Dan Parks being rested  Leigh Halfpenny took over the goalkicking and impressed with three penalties and two conversions. The Blues´ three tries were scored by winger Alex Cuthbert (who scored a double) and secondrower, Bradley Davies. Gavin Henson made his long-awaited debut for the Welsh region, playing fullback.

Scarlets 22-14 Ospreys
The Llanelli side pulled off an upset with Welsh flyhalf Rhys Priestland again underliining his superiority to the Ospreys´ Dan Biggar. USA age grade flyhalf, Hanno Dirksen played the final 9 minutes for the Ospreys on the wing. Canada´s Chauncey O´Toole did not feature for the Ospreys.

Leinster 42-23 Ulster
Leinster ran out easy winners in picking up a bonus point victory and as such the Irish province stays top of the table. The loss means Ulster are now well off the pace and have been caught by Edinburgh.

Edinburgh 23-23 Glasgow
It was looking like being a good win at Murrayfield for Edinburgh and it would have seen the club climb the rankings but the Glasgow Warriors fought back from a ten point deficit to score two tries in the final quarter. Former Pumas secondrower, Esteban Lozada played the secondhalf for Edinburgh while Federico Martín Aramburu did not feature for the Warriors. He is likely to be back permanently on the wing after the new arrival from Toulon, Rory Lamont was stretchered off. Canada´s DTH van der Merwe is only going to be avaliable in the final stages of the season.
Munster 24-9 Connacht
The home side had few troubles in defeating Connacht and with it Munster is within one point of the second placed Ospreys. It was the final match in the illustrious career of former Irish tighthead prop, John Hayes. The 38 year old played 105 international matches for Ireland and two for the British and Irish Lions. Hayes was replaced in the 59th minute. Thanks John - Argentina 2023 salutes you!

The Duque brothers to play for Castres - Could it be true?

By João Paulo Minchio

Shortly after playing for the Brazilian National Mens Rugby team in the Emirates Cup of Nations in Dubai, UAE, the pair of Lucas and Moisés Duque Rodrigues had a new destination - not Brazil, but France. The brothers were mentioned at the highest level on the official site of the International Rugby Board, as being in line for trials from some French Top 14 and Pro d2 teams. It was reported here on Argentina 2023 also. The speculation has reached social media with the forum of France´s rugbyrama, amongst others having discussed the possibility and it has been suggested that Lucas Duque (Tank) may well be in line to be signed to play at the elite level for Castres.

It has been suggested that Tank, who plays either flyhalf or scrumhalf for the Brazilian championship winning side, São José, could well be used as a medical joker (injury enforced replacement) as the club has lost the services of Rémi Talès to a long term injury. Talès´s ligament injury to his knee means the club needs somebody to fill his boots for the remainder of the season. Former Crusaders flyhalf, Cameron McIntyre is no longer at the club as he left France to continue his career in Japan with the Green Rockets. The Japanese club has refused a request from Castres to release McIntyre. He will only be avaliable for Castres at the end of February. It is here that the name Lucas Duque Rodrigues has appeared as a possible replacement for Rémi Talès.

To complicate matters further, Castres is also not able to count on the services of the young centre, Rémi Lamerat, who is similarly out with a long term injury. In his place, it has also been suggested that Castres could very well call upon the services of a Brazilian, Tank´s younger brother - Moisés Duque Rodrigues. The same forums have suggested that Tank is the best Brazilian rugby playerand has a unique style of play refered to as “samba rugby”.

The suspense about the possible departure of Brazilians to Castres should be answered very soon, as the club will probably announce the name of at least one medical joker to be hired latter this week. Until then it is all merely speculation but one can hope that a top team could sign players from an emerging tier three country like Brazil. Curiously, last Friday the Duque brothers were at the stadium to watch CA Brive vs Clermont.
