Biarritz sneak home over Bayonne

Damien Traille lines up a pass
Earlier this evening the Basque battle of Biarritz vs Bayonne took place with the match going right down to the wire. The match was supposed to have been played earlier in the season but had to be postponed which means that a number of players from both sides were playing their second game in four days after both Biarritz and Bayonne played on Friday. With Argentine World Cup outside centre Marcelo Bosch playing the full match in the 13 shirt and the United States of America´s star winger, Taku Ngwenya wearing 14 the under performing Biarritz side completed back-to-back victories. Argentine prop, Francisco Gómez Kodela was on the bench for Biarritz. The match only features one try with Bayonne replacement Thibault Lacroix scoring in the 73rd minute. Former French international flyhalf, Benjamin Boyet, added the conversion to put Bayonne ahead 19-18. Not to be outdone however, Biarritz fought back well and thanks to a penalty to Julien Peytrelongue to claim a 21-19 victory.

The result means Biarritz are off the bottom of the table as they move into thirteenth position ahead of Lyon by one point. This may not last long, however, as Lyon are to also play a make-up match tommorrow vs Montpellier. The match will also feature Pumas players with Juan Manuel Leguizamón to wear 7 for the home side while Santiago Fernández will play flyhalf for Montpellier and Martín Bustos Moyano will play on the left wing and has been named as the goalkicker. A win for Lyon would mean they move back ahead of Biarritz and could go ahead of Bordeaux-Begles with a bonus point victory. A win for Montpellier, meanwhile, would see last seasons finalists move up to eighth place ahead of Brive, Bayonne and Perpignan.

The Basque derby was a festival as per normal but as tensions ran high so did the spectators as the father of Biarritz and French international backrower, Imanol Harinordoquy entered the field to have a dispute with Bayonne´s Jean-Jo Marmouyet. Harinoridoquy was subsequently tackles by Boyet before the intruder was removed from the field.
