Pan American Games Rugby Sevens - Preview Uruguay

Having competed at two Rugby World Cup´s, Uruguay are a team of note in the Pan American Games. Los Teros are South America´s second best side at all levels, having regularly defeated all others except for Argentina. In the Pan American Games, Uruguay are to play in Pool A alongside Guyana, Mexico and neighbours, Argentina. The friendly draw means Uruguay are strong medal contenders as they should have little problems in defeated Guyana and Mexico and thus should finish second in the Pool behind Los Pumas. Such a scenario would mean Uruguay would face the third best team from Pool B (Brazil, Canada, Chile and the United States of America) in the second round and again, likely win the match to, in the end, play in the Bronze Final. Should Uruguay win the group and the first play-offs match, Los Teros would have a probable Semi Final clash against the USA.

Uruguay enters the Guadalajara tournament having had a mixed record in recent years. Los Teros played in the 2009 Rugby Sevens World Cup in Dubai after qualifying by defeating Chile 31-19 in the final of the South American qualification zone. Uruguay lost its three pool matches in Dubai to Argentina, Wales and Zimbabwe but defeated Japan 19-12 in the Bowl Quarter Final. It was Uruguay´s only win of the tournament. Uruguay also participated in the Hong Kong and Las Vegas legs of the 2009 IRB World Sevens circuit. In 2010 Los Teros did not play in any global event but in 2011 Uruguay played in Las Vegas agfter finishing second in the South American Rugby Sevens Championship in Bento Gonçalves, Brazil.
