Venezuela win South American B Championship

South America B has a new champion after the 2010 champions, Peru, were defeated 17-15 by Venezuela in the 2011 Final on Saturday in Lima. The tournament was hosted exclusively by Peru with the Federación Peruana de Rugby doing a great job in organizing the event which also included Costa Rica and Colombia. Both Peru and Venezuela arrived in the Final after defeating the other two countries. The final was refereed by Argentina´s Claudio Antonio and took place at the Club Cultural Deportivo Lima de Chorrillos in front of a big crowd.

In a tight fought contest, Venezuela scored the only try of the first half through Luis Romero while Peru managed a penalty from Gustavo Martinez as both teams sized eachother up throughout the first half. After the interval, Peru started very well with Luis Tejeda scroring the sides first try which Gustavo Martinez converted to put the hosts ahead 10-5. Peru were clearly on top in the early stages of the secondhalf and they looked liek securign victory when fullback, Jose Luis Maria Pareja scored Peru´s third try. Venezuela, however, showed great resolve to hit back with a try to Luis Zamora followed by one to Jerson Jimenez which equalized the scres at 15-15 with the conversion still to come. Sergio Pulido´s attempt was on target as Venezuela took a 17-15 lead with ten minutes left to play in the match. Venezuela had the better of play in the latter stages of the contest and, despite missing a penalty and a dropgoal attempt, held on for a two point victory.
