The Final Pool match of Rugby World Cup 2007 has gone down in history not for producing the winners of the tournament, South Africa but rather for the best try, scored by USA winger, Taku Ngwenya. South Africa had won every match and had guaranteed a Quarter Final against Fiji regardless of the result vs the USA. The North Americans, in contrast, had had a tough campaign but a positive one. The USA began strongly vs England as they conceded only two tries and scored one of their own. The USA lost the game and then lost to both Tonga and Samoa in matches that should have been victories for the North Americans. The 25-21 loss to Samoa was hard for the USA to take but it underlined the growth of the USA Eagles to now be able to compete against previous Rugby World Cup Quarter Finalists.
The final match vs South Africa came too soon afterwards as the USA only had four days and had to travel from St. Etienne to Montpellier. South Africa were given a good match by the USA and despite scoring nine tries and winning 64-15 it was indeed the USA stealing all the headlines as Zee Ngwenya left Bryan Habana for dead. Habana went on to win IRB Player of the Year. The USA managed a second try with fullback Chris Wyles showing why he has gone on to have such a successful career since 2007 in England. The USA could have scored more and in fact with ten minutes remaining the Eagles did virtually everything except score a try.
