Canada vs Wales - Rugby World Cup 2007

The number one ranked north American side, Canada were winless at Rugby World Cup 2007. It ended the proud history in which Canada had won at least one match at every World Cup until that time. The Canucks, nevertheless, were no push-overs and competed well in the tournament putting in good performances and left the tournament with a draw and three loses. The teams first match took place in the French Atlantic city of Nantes against a team looking to go far in the tournament, Wales. Like their encounter in Austrlia 2003, it was the first World Cup fixture for both teams and like in 2003 Wales found themsleves up against a team playing well.

The end result was 42-17 but this tells a very mistleading account of the events of the match. Canada were leading the match 12-9 at half time following first half tries to Jamie Cudmore and Craig Culpan. Despite entering the second half with a three point advantage it appeared unlikely that Canada could hold onto its lead. However, Canada scored its third try almost immediately after the restart with scrumhalf and captain Morgan Williams giving the Canucks a 17-9 lead. Canada´s performance had really got to the Welsh who were forced to change theur game plan altogether as flyhalf James Hook was replaced by Stephen Jones and veteran fullback Gareth Thomas also entered the game. It worked as Wales were able to take control of the match and went on to win with a bonus point.  Canada, nonetheless, had left a reminder to everybody that they are a capable side and can never be taken lightly. They will be looking for similar things at Rugby World Cup 2011 as they take on Tonga, Franca, Japan and New Zealand.
