Argentina vs South America XV (CONSUR)
The rumours have been proven correct, Argentina will play an international match vs a South American international XV in August in what is to be a warm-up fixture for Rugby World Cup 2011. The venue for the match is yet to be confirmed but the date will be August 6. The match is to be a re-birth of the side known as the South America XV which played international matches against South Africa in the 1980´s when the country was government by apartheid. The team is to be called the CONSUR XV, and will be made up of 10 players from Argentina in conjunction with four from Chile and Uruguay and Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Venezuela also all being represented.
The team is to be coached by a trio representing South Amercia´s top three sides with Raúl Pérez of Argentina, Daniel Graco of Chile and Sebastián Piñeyrúa of Uruguay. Chile has already confirmed its three of its four players for the fixture with Germán Suazo (Stade Francais), Francisco Cabrera (Old Boys), Francisco Deformes (Old Macks) all selected. Francisco Deformes is in doubt through injury but expected to be fit in time for the match.
The South American XV was a successful venture. It was almost exclusively made up of Argentine players. The side defeated South Africa in a full international fixture in Bloemfontein in 1982. The 21-12 victory remains one of the biggest results in the history of South American rugby. It remains to be seen whether the CONSUR XV will be strong enough to provide Los Pumas with a good contest but the intention should be applauded.
