Argentina experiment with World Cup squad places in mind

Argentina international rugby coach, Santiago Phelan, has named a highly experiment side for the second test against the French Barbarians to be played on Saturday in Resistencia, Chaco. The side named includes many changes and interestingly there will be eight players starting who were in Los Pampas XV in this years Vodacom Cup winning side in South Africa. They are being given a once in a lifetime opportunity with Rugby World Cup 2011 places on the line. This is to be the game they have been waiting for. Next week Phelan will name a list to travel to Pensacola, Flordia, USA to undertake a conditioning program and extensive preperation in world class facilities.

Many players will be in competition with one another despite being teammates in representing Argentina. The back five of Rafael Carballo, Gabriel Ascárate, Juan Ignacio Gauthier, Agustín Gosio and Lucas González Amorosino loom as all being after the same place in the squad. Simiarly the backrow of Julio Farías,7 Miguel de Achával and Leonardo Senatore could well all be chasing what it likely to only be one spot in the Pumas World Cup squad. There are debut appearances at the top level for secondrower Benjamín Macome, winger Agustín Gosio and a brandnew 10-12 combination of  Nicolás Sánchez and Gabriel Ascárate.

  1. I've heard rumours that Agustín Creevy is one to watch in the future and won't be a significant drop off from Ledesma.

He's now got a 2 year contract with an H Cup team and looking at their hookers he could well be first choice out of them.

    Are these rumours correct?

also why are there 2 props on the bench and no hooker?

  2. Yes - Agustín Creevy has signed a two year deal for Montpellier who were second in the Top 14 after losing the Final to Toulouse last weeekend. Creevy was a backrower playing for Biarritz in France before returning to Argentina and being suggested by former coach, Marcelo Loffreda, to play as a hooker. Now hs has jumped the cue to be second choice and may well be ahead of Ledesma due to his superior workrate.

Eusebio Guiñazú can play hooker and prop. Hence two hookers on the bench.
