The continued growth of rugby in South America has received another bosot with news that the Uruguayan Rugby Union (Unión de Rugby del Uruguay) has been officially affiliated as an active member of the Uruguayn Olympic Committee. (Comité Olímpico Uruguayo). The request was made by the URU on April 12, 2010 and almost one year latter it has been recieved with full support. With all the requirements met, and after several months of waiting, the URU has proudly announced that it is part of the COU. A statement from the COU read the following: "Accordingly, we welcome the addition to our Committee, a sport that undoubtedly helps to strengthen the Olympic Movement and the dissemination of its ideals, placing sport at the service of the harmonious development of man, promoting the construction of a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity."
Uruguay rugby, despite having been absend from the Rugby World Cup since 2003, continues to grow. This announcement will ensure that the future of the sport can only continue to grow and that the sport will recieve an increased amount of attention, players and financial support. Los Teros should benefit tremendously from the new initiative as rugby will reach levels that were unheard of only several years ago. The countdown to the 2016 Olympic Games in Riod e Janeiro should see true progress for rugby in the region.
