Pumas Squad for March Training Camp in Paris

The Union de Argentina Rugby (UAR) has announced a list of thirty European based players who will participate in a three day training camp in Paris from March 14-16. The squad features players playing at the top level in England, France and Italy and also sees a few surprizes with some players who are recieving plenty of game time for their European clubs being left out of the squad. There is no room for the Scotland based trio of Bernardo Stortoni, Federico Martín Aramburu and Esteban Lozada. All three have seemingly been replaced by younger, uncapped players. It is a sign that none are likely to make the Pumas squad for Rugby World Cup 2011. Winger Lucas Borges has not been included due to injury which is interesting given that the Pro d2 pair of Rafael Carballo and Juan Ignacio Gauthier have both been selected despite playing in France´s second division and in the same position as Stortoni and Aramburu. Another player to miss out is Agen centre Miguel Avramovic who looks to also be out of favor with Pumas coach Santiago Phelan.

The exclusion of Edinburgh´s Lozada sees Harlequins secondrower Tomás Vallejos Cinalli selected for the first time in his career and is infact the only man picked who have never been in a training camp under coach Phelan. Lozada must be feeling the pinch now as he is also considered as being behind the four secondrowers who featured for Argentina in November 2010. One of whom is Biarritz secondrower Manuel Carizza who has not been selected due to injury. Vallejos Cinalli now has a superb opportunity to combine with Patricio Albacete. The squad includes fantastic news for rugby fans world wide as the best flyhalf from Rugby World Cup 2007, Juan Martín Hernández, is back after missing all Pumas tests snice June 2009 due to firstly a back injury and then a thigh injury. Another returning player is Aironi centre Horacio San Martín who looms as an ideal player for the bench to cover 12 and 13. Toulouse hooker, Alberto Vernet Basualdo is back too as is Stade Français backrower Juan Manuel Leguizamón and Racing Metro´ Juan Pablo Orlandi.

Only European based players have been selected and for this reason players involved in South Africa´s Vodacom Cup has not been selected. This will enable established Pumas players such as Agustín Creevy, Genario Fessia and Mariano Galarza to concentrate on their side, Las Pampas XV. In total, Phelan has selected 23 players based in France, six in England and one in Italy.
